Experimental and theoretical approaches to the study of the reactivity and mechanism of the substitution of phenyl 1-(2,4-dinitronaphthyl) ether with anilines derivatives

Reactions of aniline derivatives in dimethyl sulfoxide with phenyl 1-(2,4-dinitronaphthyl) ether yield aryl 1-(2,4-dinitronaphthyl) amine, which results in substitution of the phenoxy groups at the naphthyl ipso carbon atom. Rate constants were measured spectrophotometrically, and reaction proton transfer was rate limiting. The values of the rate coefficients indicate a rate-limiting proton transfer mechanism with significant substituent effects. The calculated activation parameters were of regular variation with substituents in 4- and 3-position in the aniline nucleophile, and the reaction proceeded through a common mechanism. Hammett's reaction constant showed that the reaction rate constants depend on the electron density of the nitrogen atom of aniline derivative, whereas the coefficient value obtained from the Brönsted relation indicated that the reaction was significantly associative and quite zwitterion like. Computational studies of the substitution were carried out based on density functional theory, and theoretical to the experimental agreement was achieved.     

New ion exchange membrane derived from sulfochlorated polyether sulfone for electrodialysis desalination of brackish water

The purpose of this work is to study the desalination of brackish water using a new ion exchange membrane, made from sulfochlorated polyethersulfone (Cl‐PES), and crosslinked using aminated polyethersulfone (NH2‐PES) as a crosslinking reagent. This membrane, named ClNH2 membrane, has been obtained by reaction between Cl‐PES with 1.3 SO₂Cl groups per monomer unit and 0.2 equivalent amount of NH2‐PES. ClNH2 membrane has been characterized in terms of contact angle, transport number, intrinsic conductivity, and water uptake (as a function of temperature). Electrodialysis performances of the newly synthetized membranes have been measured using an electrodialysis cell at a laboratory scale and compared to commercial membranes. All the experiments have been performed using synthetic brackish water solutions prepared from sodium chloride salts with different concentrations (varying from 0.5 to 5.0 g/L). The concentration of different water samples obtained has been found to be below the amount recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water.     

Identification of source terms in wave equation with dynamic boundary conditions

This paper studies an inverse hyperbolic problem for the wave equation with dynamic boundary conditions. It consists of determining some forcing terms from the final overdetermination of the displacement. First, the Fréchet differentiability of the Tikhonov functional is studied, and a gradient formula is obtained via the solution of an associated adjoint problem. Then, the Lipschitz continuity of the gradient is proved. Furthermore, the existence and the uniqueness for the minimization problem are discussed. Finally, some numerical experiments for the reconstruction of an internal wave force are implemented via a conjugate gradient algorithm.

Influence of laser irradiation on the optical properties of nano-sized powder of metal oxide

ZnO Nano powders were prepared by co-precipitation method which includes post-oxidation and annealing in air. Influence of laser irradiation was carried out using 355 nm laser on the physical properties of ZnO nanoparticles. SEM studies reveal agglomeration of grains resulting into enlargement and deformation of the nanoparticles. XRD pattern exhibited decrease in FWHM which is a clear evidence of the increase in crystallite size due to laser irradiation. Optical properties showed decrease in the band gap of the laser irradiated Nano powders. The observed results indicated the UV laser irradiation increases the ZnO nanoparticles crystallinity that affects the optical properties of the ZnO.     

Synthesis of some new pyrimidine derivatives and evaluation of their anticancer and antibacterial activities

Starting from the reaction of ethyl cyanoacetate with thiourea and the appropriate aldehydes, a series of new pyrimidine derivatives were prepared. Ten selected pyrimidine derivatives were subjected to a screening system for the investigation of their antitumor potency against liver (HEPG2) cell line. The antitumor activity results indicated that most of the selected pyrimidine derivatives showed moderate growth inhibition activity against the tested cell line, but with varying intensities in comparison to the known anticancer drugs: 5-fluorouracil and doxorubicin. Some of the synthesized compounds were also tested for their antimicrobial activity against bacteria as well as fungal isolates.
