Composite defect extends analogy between cosmology and 3He

Spin-mass vortices have been observed to form in rotating superfluid 3He-B, following the absorption of a thermal neutron and a rapid transition from the normal to the superfluid state. The spin-mass vortex is a composite defect which consists of a planar soliton (wall) which terminates on a linear core (string). This observation fits well within the framework of a cosmological scenario for defect formation, known as the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. It suggests that in the early Universe analogous cosmological defects might have formed.     

On phase ordering behind the propagating front of a second-order transition

In a real system the heating is nonuniform, and a second-order phase transition to a broken-symmetry phase occurs by propagation of a temperature front. Two parameters, the cooling rate τ _Q and the transition front velocity ν _T determine the nucleation of topological defects. Depending on the relation of these parameters, two regimes are found: in the regime of fast propagation defects are created according to the Zurek scenario for the homogeneous case, while in the slow-propagation regime vortex formation is suppressed. Collisions of strings with Y junctions

We study the dynamics of Nambu-Goto strings with junctions at which three strings meet. In particular, we exhibit one simple exact solution and examine the process of intercommuting of two straight strings in which they exchange partners but become joined by a third string. We show that there are important kinematical constraints on this process. The exchange cannot occur if the strings meet with very large relative velocity. This may have important implications for the evolution of cosmic superstring networks and non-Abelian string networks.
