Liquid-liquid equilibria of (cyclohexane + acetonitrile + methylcyclohexane + toluene) and of {(acetonitrile + methylcyclohexane) + benzene or + toluene or + cyclohexane or + chlorobenzene} at 298.15 K

Tie-line results at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure are reported for (cyclohexane + acetonitrile + methylcyclohexane + toluene) and for {(acetonitrile + methylcyclohexane) + benzene or + toluene or + cyclohexane or + chlorobenzene). The extended UNIQUAC and UNIQUAC equations are used to correlate binary vapour-liquid equilibria and mutual solubilities for 10 mixtures constituting the ternary mixtures and to predict the ternary and quaternary liquid-liquid equilibria by use of only binary parameters.     

Direct and stepwise intercalation of alkylalcohols intoα-zirconium phosphate

Intercalation of alkylalcohols into -zirconium phosphate was investigated at 25°C and/or under reflux.n-Alcohols having two to five carbons and 2-propanol were taken up at 25°C. These alcohols, andn-hexanol and heptanol, also intercalated under reflux.n-Alcohols having eight to eighteen carbon atoms intercalated when a stepwise method was employed. 2-Butanol and tertiary amylalcohols intercalated under reflux using a butanol intercalate as a starting material. Ethanol-to-butanol intercalates were unstable at room temperature, losing alcohols and changing to -zirconium phosphate. The particle size of the -zirconium phosphate did not affect the intercalation of alcohols.     

Determination of traces of natural brassinosteroids as dansylaminophenylboronates by liquid chromatography with fluorimetric detection

A microanalytical method for the determination of traces of natural brassinosteroids as their dansylaminophenylboronates by liquid chromatography with fluorimetric detection is described. The boronates are easily prepared by the reaction of brassinosteroids with dansylaminophenylboronic acid (DABA), which was newly synthesized as a precolumn fluorogenic reagent for brassinosteroids. The potential of the method is demonstrated by the separation of a standard brassinosteroid mixture and the analysis of a biologically active fraction sample obtained from an extract of Zea mays L. pollen. The detection limit of the DABA derivative was found to be 25 pg for brassinolide, which is superior to that of the phenanthreneboronate derivative.     

Vanadium-catalyzed green oxidation of benzylic alcohols in water under air atmosphere

The oxidation of alcohols using catalytic amounts of metal complexes is highly attractive from the viewpoint of green chemistry principles. However, examples of metal complex-catalyzed oxidations of alcohols with O₂ using water as the solvent are still rare, and precious metals, high-pressure O₂ or air, and a stoichiometric amount of base are often required. In this study, it was found that an oxovanadium-4,4′-t-Bubpy (4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridyl) complex exhibited high catalytic activity in the oxidation of benzhydrols under an atmosphere of O₂ in water as the sole solvent. Interestingly, this catalytic oxidation method could be applied to the gram-scale aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water under the atmosphere.

C−F Transformations of Benzotrifluorides by the Activation of Ortho-Hydrosilyl Group

Single C−F transformations of aromatic trifluoromethyl compounds are challenging issues due to the strong C−F bond. We have recently developed selective methods for single C−F transformations such as allylation of o-hydrosilyl-substituted benzotrifluorides through the hydride abstraction with trityl cations. Single C−F thiolation and azidation of o-(hydrosilyl)benzotrifluorides were achieved using trityl sulfides and trityl azide catalyzed by Yb(OTf)₃. Treatment of o-(hydrosilyl)benzotrifluorides with trityl chloride resulted in single C−F chlorination. The resulting fluorosilyl group served in further transformations including protonation, halogenation, and Hiyama cross-coupling with C−Si cleavage. We also synthesized benzyl fluorides by LiAlH₄-reduction of the resulting fluorosilanes and further C−F transformations. These methods enabled us to prepare a broad range of organofluorines from simple benzotrifluorides through C−F and C−Si transformations.

A polymer having a trithiocarbonate moiety in the main chain was applied as a polymeric precursor to the synthesis of a sequence ordered polymer by insertion polymerization of styrene into the main chain by a RAFT mechanism.     

A novel cyclodimerization of 3-methyl-3-butenenitrile. An efficient synthesis of 4-cyanoisophorone

Dimerization of 3-methyl-3-butenenitrile (1) by lithium dialkylamide gave selectively 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-amino-4-cyanocyclohexa-1,3-diene (2), which was easily hydrolyzed by aqueous acid to afford 4-cyanoisophorone (3,5,5-trimethyl-4-cyano-cyclohex-2-enone) (3) quantitatively.     

Nanometric summation architecture based on optical near-field interaction between quantum dots

A nanoscale data summation architecture is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on the optical near-field interaction between quantum dots. Based on local electromagnetic interactions between a few nanometric elements via optical near fields, we can combine multiple excitations at a certain quantum dot, which allows construction of a summation architecture. Summation plays a key role for content-addressable memory, which is one of the most important functions in optical networks.
