Large-Scale Synthesis of a Niche Olefin Metathesis Catalyst Bearing an Unsymmetrical N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) Ligand and its Application in a Green Pharmaceutical Context

A large-scale synthesis of known Ru olefin metathesis catalyst VII featuring an unsymmetrical N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand with one 2,5-diisopropylphenyl (DIPP) and one thiophenylmethylene N-substituent is reported. The optimised procedure does not require column chromatography in any step and allows for preparation of up to 0.5 kg batches of the catalyst from simple precursors. The application profile of the obtained catalyst was studied in environmentally friendly dimethyl carbonate (DMC). Although VII exhibited low efficiency in cross-metathesis (CM) with electron-deficient partners, good to excellent results were noted for substrates featuring easy to isomerise C−C double bonds. This includes polyfunctional substrates of medicinal chemistry interest, such as analogues of psychoactive 5F-PB-22 and NM-2201 and two PDE5 inhibitors—Sildenafil and Vardenafil. Finally, a larger scale ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of a Vardenafil derivative was conducted in DMC, allowing for straightforward isolation of the expected product (23 g) in high yield and with low Ru contamination level (7.7 ppm).     

Tocochromanols composition in kernels recovered from different apricot varieties: RP-HPLC/FLD and RP-UPLC-ESI/MSn study

Composition of tocochromanols in kernels recovered from 16 different apricot varieties (Prunus armeniaca L.) was studied. Three tocopherol (T) homologues, namely α, γ and δ, were quantified in all tested samples by an RP-HPLC/FLD method. The γ-T was the main tocopherol homologue identified in apricot kernels and constituted approximately 93% of total detected tocopherols. The RP-UPLC-ESI/MSⁿ method detected trace amounts of two tocotrienol homologues α and γ in the apricot kernels. The concentration of individual tocopherol homologues in kernels of different apricots varieties, expressed in mg/100 g dwb, was in the following range: 1.38–4.41 (α-T), 42.48–73.27 (γ-T) and 0.77–2.09 (δ-T). Moreover, the ratio between individual tocopherol homologues α:γ:δ was nearly constant in all varieties and amounted to approximately 2:39:1.     

Photochemical Hydrogen Storage with Hexaazatrinaphthylene

When irradiated with violet light, hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATN) extracts a hydrogen atom from an alcohol forming a long-living hydrogenated species. The apparent kinetic isotope effect for fluorescence decay time in deuterated methanol (1.56) indicates that the lowest singlet excited state of the molecule is a precursor for intermolecular hydrogen transfer. The photochemical hydrogenation occurs in several alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) but not in water. Hydrogenated HATN can be detected optically by an absorption band at 1.78 eV as well as with EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) and NMR techniques. Mass spectrometry of photoproducts reveal di-hydrogenated HATN structures along with methoxylated and methylated HATN molecules which are generated through the reaction with methoxy radicals (remnants from alcohol splitting). Experimental findings are consistent with the theoretical results which predicted that for the excited state of the HATN-solvent molecular complex, there exists a barrierless hydrogen transfer from methanol but a small barrier for the similar oxidation of water.     

On stationary Markov processes with polynomial conditional moments

We study a class of stationary Markov processes with marginal distributions identifiable by moments such that every conditional moment of degree say m is a polynomial of degree at most m. We show that then under some additional, natural technical assumption there exists a family of orthogonal polynomial martingales. More precisely we show that such a family of processes is completely characterized by the sequence {(α_n, p_n)}_{n ? 0} where α′_ns are some positive reals while p′_ns are some monic orthogonal polynomials. Bakry and Mazet (Séminaire de Probabilit?s, vol. 37, 2003) showed that under some additional mild technical conditions each such sequence generates some stationary Markov process with polynomial regression.

We single out two important subclasses of the considered class of Markov processes. The class of harnesses that we characterize completely. The second one constitutes of the processes that have independent regression property and are stationary. Processes with independent regression property so to say generalize ordinary Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) processes or can also be understood as time scale transformations of Lévy processes. We list several properties of these processes. In particular we show that if these process are time scale transforms of Lévy processes then they are not stationary unless we deal with classical OU process. Conversely, time scale transformations of stationary processes with independent regression property are not Lévy unless we deal with classical OU process.
