Source of an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet formed in air or nitrogen under barrier discharge excitation

We analyzed the atmospheric pressure plasma jet excited in air and nitrogen by a barrier discharge. The source forming stable plasma jets of length up to 4 cm in air and nitrogen is constructed, and its energy and spectral characteristics are measured.     

Properties of solutions of methyl cellulose blends with poly(N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide) in water and dimethylacetamide and of the related composite films

The rheological properties of dilute and moderately concentrated solutions of methyl cellulose blends with poly(N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide) in water and dimethylacetamide are studied, and the stressstrain characteristics of the composite films based on these blends are estimated. DSC, X-ray diffraction, and thermomechanical analysis are used to investigate the structural organization of composite films, to estimate the temperatures of relaxation transitions, and to determine the composition ranges in which the polymers are compatible and form mixed structures.     

Conformational and hydrodynamic properties of the homopolymer of 2-deoxy-2-methacrylamido-D-glucose and its copolymers with acrylic acid and methacrylic acid

Hydrodynamic properties of the homologous series of the homopolymer 2-deoxy-2-methacryla-mido-D-glucose and the copolymers of 2-deoxy-2-methacrylamido-D-glucose with unsaturated acids in 0.2 M NaCl are studied via static and dynamic light scattering, viscometry, refractometry, and translational diffusion. The copolymers synthesized via the free-radical copolymerization of 2-deoxy-2-methacrylamido-D-glucose with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid contain ～20 mol % acid units. At this amount of acid units, the equilibrium rigidity of copolymer chains corresponds to that of homopolymer chains. The copolymers are distinguished by the hydrodynamic characteristics of molecules. The copolymer with methacrylic acid is similar to the homopolymer, whereas the copolymer with acrylic acid features substantially different parameters of relationships relating the hydrodynamic characteristics of homologs to their molecular masses.     

Emission properties of apokamp discharge at atmospheric pressure in air,argon, and helium

Emission spectra of the plasma jet of apokamp discharge in air, helium, and argon are studied. Apokamp at atmospheric pressure is formed in the areas of strengthening of the electric field near the bends in the channel of the pulse-periodic discharge and is directed perpendicularly to the discharge channel. Apokamp consists of a bright narrow “appendage” connected with the discharge channel and with the diffuse jet emerging from the channel. It is shown that, in helium, the emission of the diffuse part of apokamp is dominated by N₂ and N₂ ⁺, while emission of the “appendage” display lines and bands of He, N₂, N₂ ⁺, O, and OH. In argon, emission spectra of the diffuse part of the plasma jets contain not only N₂ and N₂ ⁺, but also Ar lines. It is assumed that the surrounding air plays an important role in the formation of the diffuse part of apokamp in helium and argon.     

Biologically active polymer systems based on hemoglobin

Development of the scientific principles involved in the creation of soluble macromolecular modifications of the native protein, hemoglobin, is surveyed. The main goal of the research is practical application of the results to develop blood substitutes with oxygen-transport function for treatment of massive blood loss. Models of red blood cells, which represent corpuscular polymer systems (microcapsules, liposomes, microdispersions) are considered.     

Synthesis of organic–inorganic sorbent containing phenylboronic acid as glucose-binding ligand

A copolymer with N-allylaminophenylboronic acid has been synthesized from a water-soluble N-vinylpyrrolidone–acrolein diethyl acetal copolymer. Immobilization of the obtained copolymer on silica gel afforded an organic–inorganic sorbent capable of sorbing glucose from model solutions.
