Maximum of the Characteristic Polynomial for a Random Permutation Matrix

Let P_N be a uniform random N × N permutation matrix and let χ_N(z) = det(zI_N − P_N) denote its characteristic polynomial. We prove a law of large numbers for the maximum modulus of χ_N on the unit circle, specifically, with probability tending to 1 as N → ∞ , for a numerical constant x₀ ≈ 0.652 . The main idea of the proof is to uncover a logarithmic correlation structure for the distribution of (the logarithm of) χ_N , viewed as a random field on the circle, and to adapt a well-known second-moment argument for the maximum of the branching random walk. Unlike the well-studied CUE field in which P_N is replaced with a Haar unitary, the distribution of χ_N(e^2πit) is sensitive to Diophantine properties of the point t . To deal with this we borrow tools from the Hardy-Littlewood circle method. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC     

Copper-Mediated Conversion of Complex Ethers to Esters: Enabling Biopolymer Depolymerisation under Mild Conditions

Selective processing of the β-O-4 unit in lignin is essential for the efficient depolymerisation of this biopolymer and therefore its successful integration into a biorefinery set-up. An approach is described in which this unit is modified to incorporate a carboxylic ester with the goal of enabling the use of mild depolymerisation conditions. Inspired by preliminary results using a Cu/TEMPO/O₂ system, a protocol was developed that gave the desired β-O-4-containing ester in high yield using certain dimeric model compounds. The optimised reaction conditions were then applied to an oligomeric lignin model system. Extensive 2D NMR analysis demonstrated that analogous chemistry could be achieved with the oligomeric substrate. Mild depolymerisation of the ester-containing oligomer delivered the expected aryl acid monomer.

Meyniel's conjecture holds for random d‐regular graphs

In the game of cops and robber, the cops try to capture a robber moving on the vertices of the graph. The minimum number of cops required to win on a given graph G is called the cop number of G. The biggest open conjecture in this area is the one of Meyniel, which asserts that for some absolute constant C, the cop number of every connected graph G is at most . In a separate paper, we showed that Meyniel's conjecture holds asymptotically almost surely for the binomial random graph. The result was obtained by showing that the conjecture holds for a general class of graphs with some specific expansion‐type properties. In this paper, this deterministic result is used to show that the conjecture holds asymptotically almost surely for random d‐regular graphs when d = d(n) ≥ 3.     

Screening of Three Transition Metal‐Mediated Reactions Compatible with DNA‐Encoded Chemical Libraries

The construction of DNA‐encoded chemical libraries (DECLs) crucially relies on the availability of chemical reactions, which are DNA‐compatible and which exhibit high conversion rates for a large number of diverse substrates. In this work, we present our optimization and validation procedures for three copper and palladium‐catalyzed reactions (Suzuki cross‐coupling, Sonogashira cross‐coupling, and copper(I)‐catalyzed alkyne‐azide cycloaddition (CuAAC)), which have been successfully used by our group for the construction of large encoded libraries.     

Yttrium-86 Is a Positron Emitting Surrogate of Gadolinium for Noninvasive Quantification of Whole-Body Distribution of Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents

Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are used to provide diagnostic information in clinical magnetic resonance (MR) examinations. Gadolinium (Gd) has been detected in the brain, bone and skin of patients, months and years following GBCA administration, raising concerns about long term toxicity. Despite increased scrutiny, the concentration, chemical form and fate of the retained gadolinium species remain unknown. Importantly, the whole body biodistribution and organ clearance of GBCAs is poorly understood in humans. Gadolinium lacks suitable isotopes for nuclear imaging. We demonstrate that the yttrium-86 isotope can be used as a gadolinium surrogate. We show that Gd and their analogous Y complexes have similar properties both in solution and in vivo, and that yttrium-86 PET can be used to track the biodistribution of GBCAs over a two-day period.
