Enantioselective Palladium(0)‐Catalyzed Nazarov‐Type Cyclization

A Pd⁰‐catalyzed asymmetric Nazarov‐type cyclization is described. The optimized ligand for the reaction incorporates a weakly coordinating pyridine ring into a TADDOL‐derived phosphoramidite (TADDOL=α,α,α,α‐tetraaryl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4,5‐dimethanol). The reaction leads to the formation of cyclopentenones as single diastereoisomers that incorporate two contiguous asymmetric centers, one tertiary and one an all‐carbon‐atom quaternary stereocenter, in high yield and optical purity. It is noteworthy that the reaction does not require that substrates should be activated by aryl substituents.     

Ultrafast Electron Transfer Kinetics of Graphene Grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition

High electrochemical reactivity is required for various energy and sensing applications of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Herein, we report that heterogeneous electron transfer can be remarkably fast at CVD‐grown graphene electrodes that are fabricated without using the conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for graphene transfer from a growth substrate. We use nanogap voltammetry based on scanning electrochemical microscopy to obtain very high standard rate constants k⁰≥25 cm s^?1 for ferrocenemethanol oxidation at polystyrene‐supported graphene. The rate constants are at least 2–3 orders of magnitude higher than those at PMMA‐transferred graphene, which demonstrates an anomalously weak dependence of electron‐transfer rates on the potential. Slow kinetics at PMMA‐transferred graphene is attributed to the presence of residual PMMA. This unprecedentedly high reactivity of PMMA‐free CVD‐grown graphene electrodes is fundamentally and practically important.     

Delayed feedback control based on the act-and-wait concept

This paper proposes a delayed feedback control (DFC) based on the act-and-wait concept, which reduces the dynamics of DFC systems to that of discrete-time systems. Based on this concept, a delayed feedback controller is designed for a prototype two-dimensional oscillator using a simple systematic procedure. This control has two advantages: the feedback delay time can be large and it can obtain deadbeat behavior. A numerical example using a double-scroll circuit model demonstrates these theoretical results.     

Asymmetric Total Synthesis of (−)‐Englerin A through Catalytic Diastereo‐ and Enantioselective Carbonyl Ylide Cycloaddition

An asymmetric total synthesis of the guaiane sesquiterpene (?)‐englerin A, a potent and selective inhibitor of the growth of renal cancer cell lines, was accomplished. The basis of the approach is a highly diastereo‐ and enantioselective carbonyl ylide cycloaddition with an ethyl vinyl ether dipolarophile under catalysis by dirhodium(II) tetrakis[N‐tetrachlorophthaloyl‐(S)‐tert‐leucinate], [Rh₂(S‐TCPTTL)₄], to construct the oxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane framework with concomitant introduction of the oxygen substituent at C9 on the exo‐face. Another notable feature of the synthesis is ruthenium tetraoxide‐catalyzed chemoselective oxidative conversion of C9 ethyl ether to C9 acetate.

Birefringence control by hydrogen bonding on compatible polymer pair composed of hydrogenated ring‐opening polymer and modified polystyrene

A new polymer blend composed of a hydrogenated ring‐opening polymer (HROP) with an ester group and hydroxyl functionalized polystyrene (HFP) produced the excellent transparent materials which enabled a precise birefringence control in keeping with the other physical properties for optical film use. The blend with a composition from 0.28 to 0.35 for the HFP weight fraction showed an extraordinary wavelength dispersion, transmitting through a zero birefringence point at the critical fraction of 0.45, while each polymer showed an ordinary wavelength dispersion. The observed excellent transparency even above those of the glass transition temperature was attributed to a depressed phase separation that resulted from strong hydrogen bond between the ester and hydroxyl groups. An IR analysis of the film demonstrated a remarkable red‐shift in the carbonyl peak with an increase of the hydroxylated polystyrene content, indicating a strong hydrogen bond between those groups. This new polymer blend provides a useful design to achieve practical demands for film use, both optical and mechanical under the fabrication conditions using the melt extrusion technique. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Unexpected formation of benziphthalocyanine dimer: An easily synthesizable dimer of phthalocyanine analogue

Methylene-bridged benziphthalocyanine dimer 2 was unexpectedly generated by the reaction of dihydroxybenziphthalocyanine 1 and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of a base at room temperature. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 2 revealed a V-shaped structure. Dimer 2 exhibited longer-wavelength absorption and fluorescence bands than monomer 1 in the near-IR region.
