Structural-morphological and biological properties of selenium nanoparticles stabilized by bovine serum albumin

Nanostructures formed during the reduction of ionic selenium in the selenite-ascorbate redox system in an aqueous solution of bovine serum albumin (BSA) were studied using static and dynamic light scattering and flow birefringence. It was established that this process results in the formation of stable aggregates of selenium nanoparticles that adsorb BSA molecules. It was found that highly-ordered superhigh-molecular-weight spherical nanostructures with high density and unique morphology are formed. Experiments with a cell culture of promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 showed that BSA adsorbed on selenium nanoparticles can inhibit the growth of tumor cells and deactivate free radicals with an efficiency comparable with that of sodium selenite.     

Inelastic scattering of tritium-source antineutrinos on electrons of germanium atoms

Processes of the inelastic magnetic and weak scattering of tritium-beta-source antineutrinos on the bound electrons of a germanium atom are considered. The results obtained by calculating the spectra and cross sections are presented for the energy-transfer range between 10 eV and 18 keV.     

Reactor as a source of antineutrinos: Thermal fission energy

Deeper insight into the features of a reactor as a source of antineutrinos is required for making further advances in studying the fundamental properties of the neutrino. The relationship between the thermal power of a reactor and the rate of the chain fission reaction in its core is analyzed.     

The modified version of spatio-temporal ray approximation for the Klein-Gordon equation: A simple way of deriving ray equations

In [1], it was shown that the standard version of the spatio-temporal ray optics (STRO) can only be used in the case of fairly weak frequency dispersion of the medium and cannot describe the dispersive refraction effect related to the transverse frequency modulation and having geometric-optical spatial and temporal scales. Multimode LF and MF propagation in earth—Ionosphere waveguide

A characteristic equation is derived for an isotropic spherically layered ionosphere with allowance for ground reflections. An analytic model of ionospheric reflection is presented. Simple formulas are provided that relate various characteristic ionosphere heights. It is shown that the electromagnetic field calculated as a mode sum matches the Sommerfeld plane-case field in the near zone and that for ranges greater than 1 mm the incoherent field describes the average field well.St. Petersburg State University.
