Characterization of autocatalytic decomposition reactions is important
for the safe handling and storage of energetic materials. Isothermal differential
scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been widely used to detect autocatalytic decomposition
of energetic materials. However, isothermal DSC tests are time consuming and
the choice of experimental temperature is crucial. This paper shows that an
automatic pressure tracking calorimeter (APTAC) can be a reliable and efficient
screening tool for the identification of autocatalytic decomposition behavior
of energetic materials.
Hydroxylamine nitrate (HAN) is an important
member of the hydroxylamine family. High concentrations of HAN are used as
liquid propellants, and low concentrations of HAN are used primarily in the
nuclear industry for decontamination of equipment. Because of its instability
and autocatalytic decomposition behavior, HAN has been involved in several

We describe new configurations of electromagnetic (EM) material parameters, the electric permittivity epsilon and magnetic permeability micro, which allow one to construct devices that function as invisible tunnels. These allow EM wave propagation between the regions at the two ends of a tunnel, but the tunnels themselves and the regions they enclose are not detectable to lateral EM observations. Such devices act as wormholes with respect to Maxwell's equations and effectively change the topology of space vis-à-vis EM wave propagation. Detection of calcifications in breast is an important problem in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Vibro-acoustography is a recently developed method that uses the radiation force of ultrasound to create images of the mechanical response of an object at a low frequency using the magnitude or phase of the response. Small spheres are used to explore the use of the phase of vibration as a contrast modality for use in detection and identification of calcifications in breast tissue. An experiment is presented to measure the magnitude and phase of vibration at different frequencies. The theoretical and experimental results are compared for spheres of two different sizes. Phase images are shown in which five spheres of different density can be clearly distinguished from each other. With phase measurements and images, it is demonstrated that predictable image contrast exists for spheres of different density embedded in a viscoelastic medium. 相似文献

The propagation speed of shear waves is related to frequency and the complex stiffness (shear elasticity and viscosity) of the medium. A method is presented to solve for shear elasticity and viscosity of a homogeneous medium by measuring shear wave speed dispersion. Harmonic radiation force, introduced by modulating the energy density of incident ultrasound, is used to generate cylindrical shear waves of various frequencies in a homogeneous medium. The speed of shear waves is measured from phase shift detected over the distance propagated. Measurements of shear wave speed at multiple frequencies are fit with the theoretical model to solve for the complex stiffness of the medium. Experiments in gelatin phantoms show promising results validated by an independent method. Practical considerations and challenges in possible medical applications are discussed. 相似文献

Several magnetic and optical processes contribute to the magneto-optical response of nickel thin films after excitation by a femtosecond laser pulse. We achieved a first complete identification by explicitly measuring the time-resolved Kerr ellipticity and rotation, as well as its temperature and magnetic field dependence in epitaxially grown (111) and (001) oriented Cu/Ni/Cu wedges. The first hundreds of femtoseconds the response is dominated by state filling effects. The true demagnetization takes approximately 0.5-1 ps. At the longer (sub-ns) time scales the spins are found to precess in their anisotropy field. Simple and transparent models are introduced to substantiate our interpretation. 相似文献
