Intra-cavity generation of superpositions of Laguerre–Gaussian beams

In this paper we demonstrate experimentally the intra-cavity generation of a coherent superposition of Laguerre–Gaussian modes of zero radial order but opposite azimuthal order. The superposition is created with a simple intra-cavity stop that creates equal losses for the two azimuthal modes, and we show that by adjustment of the stop we can produce modes up to azimuthal order 8. The fact that we have a coherent superposition rather than an incoherent superposition is verified by intensity measurements, propagation measurements and a decomposition of the field by an inner product executed on a phase-only spatial light modulator. Such fields have relevance in quantum information and optical trapping.     

An electron spin resonance study of dimeric,trimeric, and tetrameric paramagnetic silver atom clusters

The low temperature γ-irradiation of frozen benzene solutions containing AgClO₄ leads directly to the formation of the paramagnetic species Ag₂ ⁺, no Ag⁰ centre being detected. When benzene or toluene solutions containing AgBF₄ were similarly treated and the matrix carefully annealed, well-resolved E.S.R. spectra attributed to paramagnetic clusters containing three and four equivalent silver atoms were detected. The lack of resolved anisotropy in the spectrum of the trimer and tetramer are thought to argue in favour of a triangular and tetrahedral geometry respectively rather than linear chains.     

Dynamic modelling and simulation of a hot strip finishing mill

Hot rolling is an essential industrial process in the production of sheet steel, a widely used product in manufacturing and construction. A finishing mill performs a set of operations in a hot strip rolling mill, and is a complex unit including many processes and control loops. Its modelling is a challenging task due to the variety of phenomena that occur within the mill, and variable transport delays. Model validation is also challenging due to a scarcity of measurements. On the other hand, a dynamic model that adequately reflects the numerous interactions between the mill units can be very useful for tasks such as high performance control design or vibration analysis. In this study, a one-dimensional model has been developed and validated against real plant data. The end use of the model is intended to be looper control analysis, but the model is kept sufficiently general so that it can be used or easily extended for other applications.     

Genetic diversity among Mycoplasma species bovine group 7: clonal isolates from an outbreak of polyarthritis, mastitis, and abortion in dairy cattle.

A comprehensive genetic analysis of 60 Mycoplasma sp. bovine group 7 isolates from different geographic origins and epidemiological settings is presented. Twenty-four isolates were recovered from the joints of calves during sporadic episodes of polyarthritis in geographically distinct regions of Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, including two clones of the type strain PG5O. A further three Australian isolates were also recovered from the tympanic bulla, retropharyngeal lymph node and the lung and another three isolates had unconfirmed histories. Six isolates originated from Germany, Portugal, Nigeria, and France. Twenty-four epidemiologically related isolates of Mycoplasma sp. bovine group 7 were recovered from multiple tissue sites and body fluids of infected calves with polyarthritis, mastitic milk, and from the stomach contents, lung and liver from aborted foetuses in three large, centrally managed dairy herds in New South Wales, Australia. Restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) of genomic DNA differentiated 29 Cfol profiles among these 60 isolates and grouped all 24 epidemiologically related isolates in a defined pattern showing a clonal origin. Three isolates of this clonal cluster were recovered from mastitic milk and the synovial exudate of clinically-affected calves and appeared sporadically for periods up to 18 months after the initial outbreak of polyarthritis indicating a persistent, close association of the organism with cattle in these herds. The Cfol profile representative of the clonal cluster was distinguishable from profiles of isolates recovered from multiple, unrelated cases of polyarthritis in Queensland and New South Wales and from other countries. All 24 isolates from the clonal cluster possessed a plasmid (pBG7AU) with a molecular size of 1022 bp. DNA sequence analysis of pBG7AU identified two open reading frames sharing 81 and 99% DNA sequence similarity with hypothetical replication control proteins A and B respectively, previously described in plasmid pADB201 isolated from M. mycoides subspecies mycoides. Other isolates of bovine group 7, epidemiologically unrelated to the clonal cluster, including two clones of the type strain PG5O, possessed a similar-sized plasmid. These data confirm that Mycoplasma sp. bovine group 7 is capable of migrating to, and multiplying within, different tissue sites within a single animal and among different animals within a herd.     

Wavelength tunable laser beam shaping

Laser beam shaping by phase-only transformations, often referred to as field mapping, has for a long time been considered wavelength dependent. In this Letter we outline a simple mathematical argument that shows how the problem may be formulated in a wavelength tunable manner, requiring only a minor adjustment in the observation plane. We verify the theoretical prediction by experiment using the example of a Gaussian-to-flattop-beam transformation, and we show that the shaping is valid across a wide range of wavelengths for a single diffractive optical element.     

Generalised regression problems in metrology

This paper is concerned with generalised regression models in metrology. In experiments where much is known about the nature of the error in the measurement data, it is possible to build comprehensive mathematical models which lead to better estimates of the required parameter values. We indicate how efficient optimisation algorithms can be developed which exploit the structure of the corresponding regression problems and discuss applications in generalised distance regression and pressure metrology.     

Optimal resolution with extreme depth of focus

When the focal depth is required to be much larger than the wavelength, λ, the effective NA of the beam with optimal resolution is much less than unity. An aperture that is much larger than this beam's footprint is then of no consequence. Such beams that maximize the mean encircled energy fraction within a cylindrical focal region are shown to depend on only a single parameter, ω, that is proportional to the ratio of the square of the cylinder's radius to the product of its length and λ. A linear combination of Hermite– or Laguerre–Gaussian modes is used to represent these fields in two and three dimensions, respectively. For small ω, the results are compared both to asymptotic expansions and to optimal Gaussian and Bessel–Gauss beams.
