Quantum Observables and Effect Algebras

We study observables on monotone σ-complete effect algebras. We find conditions when a spectral resolution implies existence of the corresponding observable. We characterize sharp observables of a monotone σ-complete homogeneous effect algebra using its orthoalgebraic skeleton. In addition, we study compatibility in orthoalgebras and we show that every orthoalgebra satisfying RIP is an orthomodular poset.     

The Radon-Nikodým Property Does Not Imply the Separable Complementation Property

There is a Banach space X enjoying the Radon-Nikodým Property and a separable subspace Y which is not contained in any complemented separable subspace of X.     

States on families of subspaces of pre-Hilbert spaces

We present six families of closed subspaces of a pre-Hilbert space and we show that if arbitrary, one of them possesses at least one completely additive state, then the pre-Hilbert space is complete.     

n-Perfect and \mathbb{Q}-Perfect Pseudo Effect Algebras

An n-perfect pseudo effect algebra means that it can be decomposed into n+1 comparable slices. We show that such a pseudo effect algebra satisfying a Riesz Decomposition Property type corresponds to the lexicographic product of a cyclic group \(\frac{1}{n}\mathbb{Z}\) with some po-group. The analogous result will be proved for strong \(\mathbb{Q}\) -perfect pseudo effect algebras.     

Copies of c0(Г) and ?∞(Г)/c0(Г) in quotients of Banach spaces with applications to Orlicz and Marcinkiewicz spaces

Let X be a Banach space, let Y be its subspace, and let Г be an infinite set. We study the consequences of the assumption that an operator T embeds ?_221E;(Г) into X isomorphically with T(c₀(Г)) ⊂ Y. Under additional assumptions on T we prove the existence of isomorphic copies of c₀(Г^ℵ0) in X/Y, and complemented copies ?_∞(Г) in X/Y. In concrete cases we obtain a new information about the structure of X/Y. In particular, L∞[O,1]/C[O,1] contains a complemented copy of ?_∞/c₀, and some natural (lattice) quotients of real Orlicz and Marcinkiewicz spaces contain lattice-isometric and positively I-complemented copies of(real) ?_∞/c₀.     

Olson Order of Quantum Observables

M.P. Olson, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 28, 537–544 (1971) showed that the system of effect operators of the Hilbert space can be ordered by the so-called spectral order such that the system of effect operators is a complete lattice. Using his ideas, we introduce a partial order, called the Olson order, on the set of bounded observables of a complete lattice effect algebra. We show that the set of bounded observables is a Dedekind complete lattice.     

Test spaces and characterizations of quadratic spaces

We show that a test space consisting of nonzero vectors of a quadratic spaceE and of the set all maximal orthogonal systems inE is algebraic iffE is Dacey or, equivalently, iffE is orthomodular. In addition, we present another orthomodularity criteria of quadratic spaces, and using the result of Solèr, we show that they can imply thatE is a real, complex, or quaternionic Hilbert space.     

Analysis of semiconducting materials by high-resolution radiofrequency glow discharge mass spectrometry

The analytical capabilities of a high-resolution mass spectrometer in combination with a 13.56 MHz glow discharge ion source for the analysis of semiconducting materials (silicon carbide and gallium arsenide) were studied. It was shown that single positively charged ions of sample material have about 10 eV higher average energy than the ions of the discharge and residual gas. Therefore effective energy separation of the ions of analyte from the ions of the discharge and residual gas was achieved by adjusting the ion transfer optics (breadth and position of energy slit), which improves the analytical capabilities of the developed method.Some analytical applications are presented to illustrate the performance of r.f. GDMS for the bulk analysis of semiconducting materials. The results of the trace element analysis of gallium arsenide and silicon carbide samples are compared with data of independent methods (LIMS, ICP-AES, SIMS).Dedicated to Professor Dr. rer. nat. Moment problem for effect algebras

We present a solution to the moment problem for effect algebras, concerning mean values of all powers of an observable concentrated on the interval [0, 1] for states from a convex set. We give a solution for particular examples, e.g., for the set of all effect operators. We examine how this problem is related to a socalled E-property. Finally, we give a solution for observables studied in the operational approach to physical theories.
