The rational design of modified Cinchona alkaloid catalysts. Application to a new asymmetric synthesis of chiral chromanes

A new asymmetric synthesis of 2-substituted chiral chromanes has been achieved. The key step is the intramolecular conjugate addition of a phenolic nucleophile on a α,β-unsaturated ester catalyzed by Cinchona alkaloids. The high ee’s obtained with cinchonine and its derivatives have been rationalized by ab initio quantum chemistry calculations of transition state structures.

Robust Speed Control of a Low Damped Electromechanical System Based on CRONE Control: Application to a Four Mass Experimental Test Bench

Robust speed control of a low damped electromechanical system with backlash is studied, controlled load angular speed being not measured. The proposed control strategy combines a Luenberger observer (load angular speed and load torque disturbance estimations) and a robust CRONE controller. The observer provides estimation of the load angular speed and of the disturbance torque applied on the load. Through the computation of only three independent parameters (as many as a PID controller), the CRONE controller permits to ensure the robust speed control of the load in spite of plant parametric variations and speed observation errors. The proposed control strategy is applied to a four mass experimental test bench.     

Control of the Morphology of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Materials Elaborated by Reactive Processing Without Solvent

We study the synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrids in the molten state of the polymer without solvent, by reactive processing. The synthesis is based in a first step upon the crosslinking of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) through an exchange reaction between the pendant ester groups of EVA and tetrapropoxysilane (TPOS) in presence of dibutyltin oxide (DBTO) as an indispensable catalyst. Then in a second step the hydrolysis-condensation reactions of residual alkoxide groups results in silica network formation, which is covalently bonded with the organic network. An original approach was developed to correlate the evolution of the hydrolysis-condensation reactions through the assessment of propanol by gas chromatography and the evolution of the morphology through SAXS and TEM analysis. Silica-rich domains with a diameter close to 5 nm are obtained.     

Parabolic Capacity and Soft Measures for Nonlinear Equations

We first introduce, using a functional approach, the notion of capacity related to the parabolic p-Laplace operator. Then we prove a decomposition theorem for measures (in space and time) that do not charge the sets of null capacity. We apply this result to prove existence and uniqueness of renormalized solutions for nonlinear parabolic initial boundary-value problems with such measures as right-hand side.     

Coupling of a multilevel fast multipole method and a microlocal discretization for the 3-D integral equations of electromagnetism

The aim of this work is to propose an accurate and efficient numerical approximation for high frequency diffraction of electromagnetic waves. In the context of the boundary integral equations presented in F. Collino and B. Després, to be published in J. Comput. Appl. Math., the strategy we propose combines the microlocal discretization (T. Abboud et al., in: Third International Conference on Mathematical Aspects of Wave Propagation Phenomena, SIAM, 1995, pp. 178–187) and the multilevel fast multipole method (J.M. Song, W.C. Chew, Microw. Opt. Tech. Lett. 10 (1) (1995) 14–19). This leads to a numerical method with a reduced complexity, of order O(N^4/3ln(N)+N_iterN^2/3), instead of the complexity O(N_iterN²) for a classical numerical iterative solution of integral equations. Computations on an academic geometry show that the new method improves the efficiency, for a solution with a good level of accuracy. To cite this article: A. Bachelot et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. A new insight into the understanding of the collapsed form of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) molecules

Possible collapsed forms of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) molecules are reviewed on the basis of first principle calculations. Various configurations and associated conformations are detailed. The calculated optimized structures exhibit different possibilities of creating networks of intra-molecular bonds of the hydrogen type. We show that the most remarkable one is able to form a local, self-saturated and well ordered helix. We also indicate in which direction the synthesis of the molecule should be oriented to improve its global behavior in term of hydrophobic/hydrophilic behavior.     

Synthesis of cyclic mono- and bis-disulfides and their selective conversion to mono- and bis-thiosulfinates

Twelve-membered ring pseudopeptidic cyclic disulfides have been prepared by iodine oxidation of the parent dithiols. However, oxidation of N,N′-(1,2-phenylene)bis(2-mercapto-2-methylpropanamide) afforded a 25/75 mixture of cyclic mono- and bis-disulfides that were separated by selective precipitation in CHCl₃. The cyclic bis-disulfide was selectively prepared by iodine oxidation of the Ni complex of this dithiol and crystallized. Its crystal structure was solved by X-ray diffraction. All these cyclic mono- or bis-disulfides were selectively converted to cyclic mono- and bis-thiosulfinates upon stoichiometric oxidation with dimethyldioxirane at low temperature. ¹H NMR of the cyclic bis-thiosulfinate revealed the presence of four isomers, two couples of stereoisomers, as expected from the insertion of two oxygen atoms in this compound, one on each disulfide bond. The two couples of cis/trans isomers were separated by preparative TLC and identified after alkaline cleavage of the two S(O)-S bonds and metalation with Ni(II). As HO⁻ attack is selective for the sulfinyl sulfur, the nature of the Ni complexes obtained is a signature of each couple of stereoisomers.     

The functional equation P(f)=Q(g) in a p-adic field

Let K be a complete ultrametric algebraically closed field of characteristic π. Let P,Q be in K[x] with P′Q′ not identically 0. Consider two different functions f,g analytic or meromorphic inside a disk |x−a|<r (resp. in all K), satisfying P(f)=Q(g). By applying the Nevanlinna's values distribution Theory in characteristic π, we give sufficient conditions on the zeros of P′,Q′ to assure that both f,g are “bounded” in the disk (resp. are constant). If π≠2 and deg(P)=4, we examine the particular case when Q=λP (λ∈K) and we derive several sets of conditions characterizing the existence of two distinct functions f,g meromorphic in K such that P(f)=λP(g).     

Modélisation de structures électromagnétiques périodiques – matériaux bianisotropes avec mémoire

In this Note we propose a rigorous justification of the limit constitutive law of a periodic bi-anisotropic electromagnetic structure with memory. This study is based on the periodic unfolding method, introduced by D. Cioranescu, A. Damlamian and G. Griso, and is applied on the time domain and on the frequency domain.
