Rapid reductive degradation of dye contaminated water by using a core-shell nano zerovalent iron (nZVI)

We report on the synthesis of zero valent iron nano particles (nZVI) via chemical reduction method. The large peak visible in the XRD pattern reveals the presence of an amorphous phase of iron. SEM and TEM images signify the dendritic morphology and core-shell-like structure of manufactured nZVI particles respectively. Methylene blue dye (MB) was used as model contaminant to assess the reductive degradation proficiency of nZVI. With complete elimination of MB, the fresh synthesized nZVI exhibited the best performance (97%), while the regenerated nZVI had an 85.1% MB removal efficiency after five regenerations. The equilibrium data of adsorption were fitted to eight different kinetic and isothermal models. The effects of critical operating factors such as pH, varied amounts of nZVI and dye concentration, adsorption temperature, and adsorption time were also studied. A presumptive reaction mechanism and function of core-shell construction in contaminant sequestration has also been investigated.     

A General Strategy Toward pH-Resistant Phenolic Fluorophores for High-Fidelity Sensing and Bioimaging Applications

Aryl alcohol-type or phenolic fluorophores offer diverse opportunities for developing bioimaging agents and fluorescence probes. Due to the inherently acidic hydroxyl functionality, phenolic fluorophores provide pH-dependent emission signals. Therefore, except for developing pH probes, the pH-dependent nature of phenolic fluorophores should be considered in bioimaging applications but has been neglected. Here we show that a simple structural remedy converts conventional phenolic fluorophores into pH-resistant derivatives, which also offer “medium-resistant” emission properties. The structural modification involves a single-step introduction of a hydrogen-bonding acceptor such as morpholine nearby the phenolic hydroxyl group, which also leads to emission bathochromic shift, increased Stokes shift, enhanced photo-stability and stronger emission for several dyes. The strategy greatly expands the current fluorophores’ repertoire for reliable bioimaging applications, as demonstrated here with ratiometric imaging of cells and tissues.

Supercritical Fluid Extract of Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. Seeds Mitigates Fertility Impairment in a Zebrafish Model

Putrajeevak (Putranjiva roxburghii Wall.; synonym Drypetes roxburghii (Wall.) Hurus) seeds have been used since ancient times in the treatment of infertility in the Ayurvedic system of medicine in India. In this study, the oil component of Putrajeevak seeds (PJSO) was extracted using the supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) method using liquid CO₂ and the constituents were analyzed using gas chromatography-flame ionized detectorand high-performance thin-layer chromatography. PJSO contained trace amounts of β-sitosterol with oleic and linoleic acids as the major fatty acid constituents. Male and female zebrafish were mutagenized with N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) and fish that produced less than 20 viable embryos were selected for the study. SCFE oil extracts from the P. roxburghii seeds were used in this study to reverse fertility impairment. The mutant fish were fed with PJSO for a period of 14 days and the rates of fertility, conception, and fecundity were determined with wild-type healthy fish as a breeding partner. Treatment with PJSO increased the ovarian follicle count as well as the number of mature eggs, while reducing the number of ovarian cysts. Sperm count as well as sperm motility were greatly enhanced in the ENU-mutagenized male zebrafish when treated with PJSO. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the effectiveness of P. roxburghii seed oil in reversing impaired fertility in both male and female zebrafish models.     

The measurement of the material parameters of viscoelastic fluids using a rotating sphere and a rheogoniometer

Summary In this work, measurement of the flow field around a rotating sphere has been used to obtain the material parameters of a second-order Rivlin-Ericksen fluid. Experiments were carried out with a Laser-Doppler anemometer to obtain the velocity distribution and usingGiesekus' analysis, the material parameters for the second-order fluid were obtained.

Zusammenfassung In dieser Untersuchung wird die Ausmessung des Strömungsfeldes um eine rotierende Kugel dazu verwendet, um die Stoffparameter einer Rivlin-Ericksen-Flüssigkeit zweiter Ordnung zu erhalten. Die Experimente zur Bestimmung der Geschwindigkeitsverteilung werden mit einem Laser-Doppler-Anemometer durchgeführt, und zur Auswertung der Parameter der Flüssigkeit zweiter Ordnung wird eine Analyse vonGiesekus benutzt.
