Synthesis,characterization and biological properties of novel ON donor bidentate Schiff bases and their copper(II) complexes

Four novel ON donor Schiff bases (E)-3-((4-phenoxyphenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol (HL₁),(E)-3-((4-(4-biphenyloxy)phenyliminomethyl)benzene-1,2-diol (HL₂), (E)-3-((4-naphthoxyphenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol (HL₃), (E)-3-((4-(2-naphthoxy)phenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol (HL₄) and their copper(II) complexes bis((E)-3-((4-phenoxyphenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol) copper(II) (Cu(L₁)₂) bis((E)-3-((4-(4-biphenyloxy)phenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol) copper(II) (Cu(L₂)₂), bis((E)-3-((4-naphthoxyphenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol) copper(II) (Cu(L₃)₂), bis((E)-3-((4-(2-naphthoxy)phenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol) copper(II) (Cu(L₄)₂) have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (FTIR, NMR, UV–visible) and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of HL₁, HL₂, HL_3, and HL₄ have been determined, which reveal intramolecular N-H?O (HL₁, HL₂, HL_3, and HL₄) hydrogen bonds in the solid state. Keto-amine and enol-imine tautomerism is exhibited by the Schiff bases in solid and solution states. The Schiff bases and their copper(II) complexes have been screened for their biological activities. In antimicrobial assays (antibacterial and antifungal), HL₄ showed promising results against all strains through dual inhibition property while the rest of the compounds showed activity against selective strains. On the other hand, in cytotoxic, DPPH, and inhibition of hydroxyl (OH) free radical-induced DNA damage assays, the results were found significantly correlated with each other, i.e. the ligands HL₁ and HL₂ showed moderate activity while their complexes Cu(L₁)₂ and Cu(L₂)₂ exhibited prominent increase in activity. As the results of these assays are supporting each other, it represents the strong positive correlation and antioxidant nature of investigated compounds.     

Viscoelastic properties of pig kidney in shear, experimental results and modelling

 In this paper, the results from a series of rheological tests of fresh pig kidney have been reported. Using a standard strain-controlled rheometer, the oscillation strain sweep experiment showed a linear viscoelastic strain limit of the order of 0.2% strain. To determine the components of dynamic moduli in terms of frequency, shear oscillation tests were done at strain 0.2% using a stress-controlled rheometer. Shear stress relaxation tests were carried out with a fixed strain of 0.2% and 0.02 s rise time. The model we have developed uses a multi-mode upper convected Maxwell (UCM) model with variable viscosities and time constants, to which we have added a Mooney hyper-elastic response, both multiplied by a damping function. Different forms of damping functions that control the non-linearity of strain-stress profile have been tested. The model was fitted to our experimental data, and matched the entire test data reasonably well with a single set of parameters. Received: 5 May 2000 Accepted: 16 March 2001     

Synthesis of Main‐Chain Liquid‐Crystalline Polyesters Containing Diphenyl Mesogens by Chemo‐Enzymatic Route †

Main‐chain thermotropic liquid‐crystalline polyesters containing rigid biphenyl mesogens and flexible spacers were synthesized by chemo‐enzymatic route. The enzyme‐catalyzed polymerization showed high regio‐ and chemo‐ selectivity, and is environmentally friendly. The resulting polyesters were characterized with ¹H‐NMR, ¹³C‐NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized light optical microscopy (POM).     

Sensory Response and Two-Photon-Fluorescence Study of Regioregular Polythiophene Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles of a regioregular and soluble polythiophene were fabricated by mini-emulsion technique. The fabricated nanoparticles were characterized by optical spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering. The fluorescence quenching of these fabricated nanoparticles with 2,4-dinitrotolune (DNT) in aqueous and organic solutions was investigated. Significant fluorescence quenching was observed. The Stern-Volmer constants were determined to be higher than that of the bulk polymer in solution, indicating that the nanoparticles provide better sensitivity in DNT sensing. Strong two-photon-induced fluorescence was measured from these nanoparticles.     

Filling in the gaps: modelling incomplete CBL data using a graphing calculator

This article discusses the real-world problem-solving lesson that emerged when a high school math teacher used a motion detector with a CBL and graphing calculator to obtain the 'bounce' data of a ping-pong ball. While practising the 'bounce' data collection--a series of diminishing parabolas--the teacher accidentally pulled the motion detector away and then, realizing his mistake, pulled it back. The resulting data showed a series of parabolas, but one was missing. The teacher used this opportunity to create a lesson in which his students collect 'bad data' and then fill in the missing parabola using critical components of parabolas, such as the latus rectum and the vertex, and using matrices. The article provides all the necessary directions, formulas, and names of resources needed to replicate the lesson. The creation of this lesson demonstrates that a serendipitous error can create a genuine and authentic problem-solving activity for math students.     

Towards a Molecular Understanding of Cation-Anion Interactions and Self-aggregation of Adeninate Salts in DMSO by NMR and UV Spectroscopy and Crystallography

Rare anionic forms of nucleic acids play a significant biological role and lead to spontaneous mutations and replication and translational errors. There is a lack of information surrounding the stability and reactivity of these forms. Ion pairs of mono-sodium and -potassium salts of adenine exist in DMSO solution with possible cation coordination sites at the N1, N7 and N9 atoms of the purine ring. At increasing concentrations π-π stacked dimers are the predominant species of aggregates followed by higher order aggregation governed by coordination to metal cations in which the type of counter ion present has a central role in the aggregate formation.     

Development of chiral heteroleptic magnesium amides; asymmetric deprotonations mediated by six-membered metallocyclic amidomagnesium naphtholates

A series of enantioenriched six-membered metallocyclic amidomagnesium naphtholates were prepared and used to probe the structure–reactivity/selectivity relationships of heteroleptic magnesium base complexes within asymmetric deprotonation reactions. An effective complex was identified and applied within enantioselective enolisation processes, delivering good levels of enantioselectivity and also revealing key structural requirements for achieving such selectivity.     

SSZ‐27: A Small‐Pore Zeolite with Large Heart‐Shaped Cavities Determined by Using Multi‐crystal Electron Diffraction

The high‐silica zeolite SSZ‐27 was synthesized using one of the isomers of the organic structure‐directing agent that is known to produce the large‐pore zeolite SSZ‐26 ( CON ). The structure of the as‐synthesized form was solved using multi‐crystal electron diffraction data. Data were collected on eighteen crystals, and to obtain a high‐quality and complete data set for structure refinement, hierarchical cluster analysis was employed to select the data sets most suitable for merging. The framework structure of SSZ‐27 can be described as a combination of two types of cavities, one of which is shaped like a heart. The cavities are connected through shared 8‐ring windows to create straight channels that are linked together in pairs to form a one‐dimensional channel system. Once the framework structure was known, molecular modelling was used to find the best fitting isomer, and this, in turn, was isolated to improve the synthesis conditions for SSZ‐27.
