Lichens are symbiotic associations formed mainly by ascomycete fungi and green algae or cyanobacteria. The presence of chitin in the fungal cell wall has been revealed by previous studies. Considering the presence of fungi in the lichens, this work determines the presence of chitin in a cosmopolitan lichen species Xanthoria parietina. In this study, chitin was derived from a lichen species for the first time and its physicochemical properties were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis. The dry weight chitin content of X. parietina was 4.23%, and this chitin was in the α-form. The crystalline index value of the lichen chitin was calculated as 70.1%. “Far UV-C” is an effective disinfection method that can be deployed in occupied areas. Commercially available Krypton Chloride (KrCl*) excimer lamps filtered to emit at 222 nm are effective in disinfecting pathogens and safe for human exposure up to an allowable threshold exposure, which is much longer than for conventional UV lamps emitting at 254 nm. Laboratory and controlled field testing of a filtered KrCl* excimer lamp for disinfection of a virus suspended in a thin film aqueous solution in an occupied office setting was conducted. Complete inactivation of almost 6 log (99.9999%) of Phi6 bacteriophage virus was achieved in ~20 min of exposure time in a field setting, equivalent to a dose of about 10 mJ cm−2. The Phi6 inactivation rate constant for the field test results were not statistically different from laboratory values (P > 0.05, paired t-test). When positioned at 1 m distance from possible human exposure, this device can be used safely for almost 4.5 h of continuous direct exposure without any acute or long-term adverse health effects. This study illustrates the applicability and deployment of Far UV-C for pathogen reduction and can help in decision making for implementation of Far UV-C for disinfection in human-occupied environments. 相似文献

In our study, we examined 91 fecal samples from five different groups of people containing HIV patients, hemodialysis patients, kidney transplant recipients, immunocompetent humans without clinical signs, and humans with suspected cryptosporidiosis. The purpose of our study was to determine species and genotype composition of representatives of Cryptosporidium spp. using PCR analysis of small subunit ribosomal RNA gene and 60‐kDa glycoprotein gene and examine their phylogenetic relationship. In HIV‐positive/AIDS‐infected group of patients and in hemodialysis patients, no presence of Cryptosporidium species was detected. In two kidney transplant recipients, we detected species/genotypes Cryptosporidium parvum IIaA13G1T1R1 (KT355488) and Cryptosporidium hominis IaA11G2R8 (KT355489) and in two immunocompetent patients with clinical symptoms, we identified Cryptosporidium muris and C. hominis IbA10G2T1 (KT355490). In the group of healthy immunocompetent individuals without clinical signs, we identified species/genotype C. hominis IbA11G2 (KT355491) in one sample. 相似文献

We study a toy model for “partially open” wave-mechanical system, like for instance a dielectric micro-cavity, in the semiclassical
