Conformational Transmission in DNA

Abstract

This poster presents our recent results on DNA dimers in which a stable trigonal bipyramidal pentacoordinated phosphorus (P^v) structure forms the internucleoside linkage. Conformational analysis of the systems 1-4 with 300 and 500 ¹H NMR has shown that the P^v structure results in a distorted conformation of the backbone structuE (1).     

Queues with waiting time dependent service

Motivated by service levels in terms of the waiting-time distribution seen, for instance, in call centers, we consider two models for systems with a service discipline that depends on the waiting time. The first model deals with a single server that continuously adapts its service rate based on the waiting time of the first customer in line. In the second model, one queue is served by a primary server which is supplemented by a secondary server when the waiting of the first customer in line exceeds a threshold. Using level crossings for the waiting-time process of the first customer in line, we derive steady-state waiting-time distributions for both models. The results are illustrated with numerical examples.     

Homomorphisms and boundedness in topological groups

We consider homomorphisms from a normed space into a topological group. Assuming their boundedness in a neighbourhood (in relative topology) of an extremal point of the unit sphere, we derive their linearity (whenever it makes sense), closedness of the graph or continuity.     

In vivo XANES measuring technique for studying the arsenic uptake in cucumber plants

New in vivo X‐ray absorption near edge structure measuring technique was developed by using liquid nitrogen steam flow for cooling cucumber samples keeping them under cryogenic conditions during the measurement in order to preserve the original chemical states of arsenic species in the hypocotyl. The aim of this study was to determine the As oxidation state in order to identify the possible metabolic processes during the nutrient uptake in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv Joker) as model plant. The plants were grown in Hoagland's modified nutrient solution. The ratio of the quantity of two As species was determined in the hypocotyls of the cucumber samples: arsenite, As(III) and arsenate, As(V). The ultimate biological goal of the in vivo experiments was to investigate the applicability of the X‐ray absorption near edge structure technique under cryogenic conditions and to specify the resistance level of the plants to arsenic toxicity when different chemical forms of iron, FeCl₃ and Fe‐ascorbate were supplied in the nutrient solution. We have examined the influence of the intense synchrotron radiation beam on the transformation of the oxidation number of both As species when the effect of the reactive oxygen forms was eliminated by the presence of ascorbate.
