Nonlinear optical properties of regioregular main‐chain polyesters

We have prepared new polyesters containing quadratic, nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophores covalently incorporated into the main chain. In these polymers, the sequence of the chromophore units along the main chain is rigorously head to tail. All the polyesters are processable, both in the melt and in solution. For one polyester, a full second‐order NLO characterization has been performed. An out‐of‐resonance d₃₃ coefficient of 21 pm/V at 1368 nm has been measured. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compositions for health products obtained by treatment of tomato with beta-cyclodextrin

The aim of this work was to produce lycopene-containing powders from tomato products by a solvent-free method making use of β-cyclodextrin (βCD). Powders were prepared by spray-drying a tomato concentrate (TC), one of the most bioavailable form of lycopene, after mechanical treatment with βCD in different weight ratios. The obtained product was centrifuged to eliminate partly food matrix and characterized for the amount of lycopene hydrodispersed/hydrosolubilized in the aqueous fraction. The chemical antioxidant activity of sera was evaluated too. Powders obtained by spray-drying sera exhibited good flow properties, a lycopene content between 0.4 and 1.09 mg/g and excellent water dispersability. The process developed, which makes use of βCD for the treatment of tomato products, turns to be of great interest to obtain a bulk material for nutraceuticals displaying superior biovailability of lycopene.

Stereoselective Epoxidation of Cyclic Dienes and Trienes by Dioxiranes

Epoxides are essential building blocks in organic chemistry. The epoxidation of unsubstituted cyclic dienes 2 , 3 , 4 and triene 5 using dimethyldioxirane ( 1a ) and its trifluoro analog 1b methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane has been investigated. The excellent yields obtained (90–98%) are accompanied by outstandingly high diastereoselectivities (90–98%). Interpretation of results based upon the early idea that polar groups can direct the dioxirane attack by dipole–dipole interaction provides a likely rationale, along with a more generalized mechanistic view.     

Direct Synthesis of 3-Aryl Substituted Isocoumarins and Phthalides through Palladium Acetate Catalyzed C(sp2)−H Activation in Ionic Liquids

A novel Pd-catalysed oxidative coupling between benzoic acids and vinylarenes or acrylates to furnish isocoumarins and phthalides is reported. The reaction proceeds smoothly in molten tetrabutylammonium acetate via a selective C−H bond activation, with very low percentage of ligand-free palladium acetate as the catalyst, under atmospheric pressure of oxygen. Sub-stoichiometric amount of copper acetate is also required as a reoxidant for the palladium.
