Measurements of the reactor neutron power in absolute units

The neutron power of the reactor of the Yenisei space nuclear power plant is measured in absolute units using the modernized method of correlation analysis during the ground-based tests of the Yenisei prototypes. Results of the experiments are given. The desired result is obtained in a series of experiments carried out at the stage of the plant preparation for tests. The acceptability of experimental data is confirmed by the results of measuring the reactor neutron power in absolute units at the nominal level by the thermal balance during the life cycle tests of the ground prototypes.

Clustering of gadolinium endofullerenols in aqueous solutions

Nature of structuring of aqueous solutions of paramagnetic endofullerenols Gd@C _n (OH)_38–40 was determined in relation to the concentration and pH factor from small-angle neutron scattering, viscometric, and conductometric data. Molecular fractal clusters of the type of branched polymers were found, with their correlation radius being about 20 nm and aggregation numbers reaching a value of 104. The clusterized systems obtained are promising as a basis for MRI-contrasting agents and other biomedical preparations for diagnostics and therapy.     

Study of the Chlorination of Avobenzone in Sea Water by Gas Chromatography–High Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Disinfection is an important step in the purification of drinking and swimming pool water. The most common procedure includes chlorination, which efficiently eliminates microorganisms. However, the reaction of active chlorine with dissolved organic matter produces numerous organochlorine compounds posing a hazard to the environment and human health. UV filters belong to emerging contaminants, as their application to skin protection from UV irradiation becomes increasingly popular all over the world. Certain components of UV filters were detected in swimming pools and result in the emergence of new ecotoxicants. In the present study, 40 compounds, including numerous brominated derivatives, which result from the chlorination of avobenzone in sea water, were identified by gas chromatography–high resolution mass spectrometry. In addition, the applicability of photocatalysis to the destruction of chlorination products was studied. The procedure was found to be rather efficient and allows a decrease in the total amount of avobenzone transformation products by a factor of 10. The only compound class demonstrating stability under the applied conditions is exemplified by halogenated acetophenone derivatives.     

Phase composition of nanosized oxide film structures based on lanthanum and scandium doped HfO<Subscript>2</Subscript>

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (over thickness profiling of the elemental and phase compositions of the samples) are used to investigate the elemental and phase compositions, structures, and microstructures of films synthesized in La–Hf–O and Sc–Hf–O systems from organometallic volatile compounds. The dependence of the phase compositions and microstructures of films on the concentration of a doping rare earth element is determined. It is found that lanthanum and scandium doping of hafnium oxide results in the formation of solid solutions of a hightemperature cubic modification. The conditions for obtaining the pyrochlore phase are determined in the nanocrystalline Hf–La–O system.
