Molecular mobility in hydrogels based on poly(acrylic acid) and macrodiisocyanates

Partially water-swellable polymer networks were synthesized on the basis of poly(acrylic acid) and various macrodiisocyanates. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic local regions were revealed in swollen networks (hydrogels) by means of the spin probe technique. The local mobility in hydrophobic regions depends on the macrodiisocyanate structure; however, it is substantially lower than that in hydrophilic regions for all gels. It was assumed that the presence of hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions and the difference in their local dynamics must have a substantial effect on the pharmacokinetics of release of drugs immobilized in these hydrogels.     

Existence of black hole solutions for the Einstein-Yang/Mills equations

This paper provides a rigorous proof of the existence of an infinite number of black hole solutions to the Einstein-Yang/Mills equations with gauge groupSU(2), for any event horizon. It is also demonstrated that the ADM mass of each solutions is finite, and that the corresponding Einstein metric tends to the associated Schwarzschild metric at a rate 1/r ², asr tends to infinity.Research supported in part by the NSF, Contract No. DMS-89-05205Research supported in part by the DE, Contract No. De-FG 02-88 EF 25065     

The fluoride ion effect in the reactions of singlet oxygen with enols

The fluoride ion effect in the reactions of enolic systems with singlet oxygen has been investigated. β-Dicarbonyl compounds yielded 1,2,3-tricarbonyl derivatives, some of which underwent further hydration, whereas α-diketones suffered oxidative decarboxylation to give open-chain aldehydo-acids or keto-acids.     

Efficient synthesis of vinyl chlorides and/or gem-dichlorides from ketones by treatment with tungsten hexachloride

Treatment of cyclic ketones, e.g. 4, with tungsten hexachloride (WCl₆) provided good yields of vinyl chlorides, e.g. 5, and/or gem-dichlorides. A trans-diequatorial dichloride 9 was prepared by treatment of the corresponding epoxide 8 with WCl₆.     

A total synthesis of (±)-cannabisativine

A synthesis of racemic cannabisativine is reported. Intramolecular opening of an $\text{erythro}$-acetoxy epoxide by a secondary amino group provided the side chain containing the desired stereochemistry.     

Existence,uniqueness, and nondegeneracy of positive solutions of semilinear elliptic equations

We study positive solutions of the Dirichlet problem: u(x)+f(u(x))=0,xD ⁿ ,u(x)=0,xD ⁿ , whereD ⁿ is ann-ball. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for solutions to be nondegenerate. EPR spin probe and spin label studies of some low molecular and polymer micelles

The rotational mobility of spin probes of different shape and size in low molecular and polymer micelles has been studied. Several probes having nitroxide fragment localized either in the vicinity of micelle interface or in the hydrocarbon core have been used. Upon increasing the number of carbon atoms in hydrocarbon chain of detergent from 7 to 13 (sodium alkyl sulfate micelles) or from 12 to 16 (alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles) the rotational mobility of spin probes is decreased by the factor 1.5–2.0. The spin probe rotational mobility in polymer micelles (the complexes of alkyltrimethylammonium bromides and polymethacrylic or polyacrylic acids) is less than mobility in free micelles of the same surfactants. The study of EPR-spectra of spin labeled polymethacrylic acid (PMA) indicated that formation of water soluble complexes of polymer and alkyltrimethylammonium bromides in alkaline solutions (pH 9) does not affect the polymer segmental mobility. On the other hand, the polymer complexes formation in slightly acidic water solution (pH 6) breaks down the compact PMA conformation, thus increasing the polymer segmental mobility. Possible structures of polymer micelles are discussed.     

The oxazole-triamide rearrangement. Application to peptide synthesis

The carboxyl group of a N-acylated amino acid may be protected by conversion to an oxazole derivative which, on photoxygenation, regenerates the carboxyl group in activated (triamide) form for peptide synthesis.     

Effect of glutaraldehyde on the activity of some DNA restriction endonucleases

The effect of the bifunctional crosslinking reagent glutaraldehyde on the activity of the restriction enzymes Bam HI,Hind III, EcoRI, and Tthlll I was investigated. The four enzymes exhibited differential sensitivity to inactivation. Tthlll I was the most sensitive, with activity losses occurring at levels of 0.0025% and above.Hind III was the most stable of the four and remained fully active at concentrations as high as 0.075%. Addition of BSA to incubation mixtures generally had a stabilizing effect. Implications of these results for the design of glutaraldehyde-based methods for the immobilization of restriction endonucleases are discussed.
