Visible-Light Augmented Lithium Storage Capacity in a Ruthenium(II) Photosensitizer Conjugated with a Dione-Catechol Redox Couple

Controlling redox activity of judiciously appended redox units on a photo-sensitive molecular core is an effective strategy for visible light energy harvesting and storage. The first example of a photosensitizer - electron donor coordination compound in which the photoinduced electron transfer step is used for light to electrical energy conversion and storage is reported. A photo-responsive Ru-diimine module conjugated with redox-active catechol groups in [Ru(II)(phenanthroline-5,6-diolate)₃]⁴⁻ photosensitizer can mediate photoinduced catechol to dione oxidation in the presence of a sacrificial electron acceptor or at the surface of an electrode. Under potentiostatic condition, visible light triggered current density enhancement confirmed the light harvesting ability of this photosensitizer. Upon implementation in galvanostatic charge-discharge of a Li battery configuration, the storage capacity was found to be increased by 100 %, under 470 nm illumination with output power of 4.0 mW/cm⁻². This proof-of-concept molecular system marks an important milestone towards a new generation of molecular photo-rechargeable materials.

The Effect of a Substrate on the Current-vs-Voltage Characteristics of Thin-Film Sandwich Structures Based on Buckminsterfullerene

We analyze the current-vs-voltage (J-V) characteristics of ITO/C₆₀/Al sandwich cells, where ITO is the double indium tin oxide, C₆₀ is the buckminsterfullerene and Al is the thermally evaporated top aluminum electrode. These cells were obtained on either glass/ITO or polyethyleneterephthalate/ITO substrates (or, optionally, on glass/ZnO substrates) in a parallel process under identical conditions. However, the J-V dependences in each series behave very differently. The results are discussed in terms of the migration of admixtures from a bulk substrate material toward the top metallic electrode, thus modifying the photovoltaic properties of cells.     

On Some Electroconvection Models

We consider a model of electroconvection motivated by studies of the motion of a two-dimensional annular suspended smectic film under the influence of an electric potential maintained at the boundary by two electrodes. We prove that this electroconvection model has global in time unique smooth solutions.     

Semi-Markov Modelling for Multi-State Systems

In this work we focus on multi state systems that we model by means of semi-Markov processes. The sojourn times are seen to be independent not identically distributed random variables and assumed to belong to a general class of distributions that includes several popular reliability distributions like the exponential, Weibull, and Pareto. We obtain maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters of interest and investigate their asymptotic properties. Plug-in type estimators are furnished for various quantities related to the system under study.     

Thermal Effects and Structural Changes of Photosynthetic Reaction Centers Characterized by Wide Frequency Band Hydrophone: Effects of Carotenoids and Terbutryn

Photothermal characteristics and light‐induced structural (volume) changes of carotenoid‐containing and noncontaining photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) were investigated by wide frequency band hydrophone. We found that the presence of carotenoid either does not play considerable role in the light‐induced conformational movements, or these rearrangements are too slow for inducing a photoacoustic (PA) signal. The kinetic component with a few tens of microseconds, exhibited by the carotenoid‐less RCs, appears to be similar to that of triplet state lifetimes, identified by other methods. The binding of terbutryn to the acceptor side is shown to affect the dynamics of the RC. Our results do not confirm large displacements or volume changes induced by the charge movements and by the charge relaxation processes in the RCs in few hundreds of microseconds time scale that accompanies the electron transfer between the primary and secondary electron acceptor quinones.     

New PP/PLA/cellulose composites: effect of cellulose functionalization on accelerated weathering behavior (accelerated weathering behavior of new PP/PLA/cellulose composites)

Polylactic acid (PLA) was used as partial replacement for conventional thermoplastic matrix, new composites comprising cellulose, polypropylene (PP), and PLA being realized. In order to obtain a compatible interface between cellulosic pulp and polymeric matrix, two chemical modifications of cellulose with stearoyl chloride and toluene di‐isocyanate (TDI) were performed, structural changes being evidenced by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The composite materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic scanning calorimetry, impact, tensile and melt rheological tests, surface tension, and dynamic vapor sorption. Because promising results for impact strength and Young modulus were recorded when replacing 15% of PP with PLA in blends of PP with the same cellulosic pulp load, the aim of our study was to assess the behavior to accelerate weathering of composites comprising PP, cellulosic pulp, and PLA. Although the slight decrease in the mechanical properties was recorded after accelerated weathering, the use of functionalized cellulose successfully prevented the deterioration of surface materials, especially for composite comprising stearoyl chloride treated cellulose pulp. Nonlinear maximum principles for dissipative linear nonlocal operators and applications

We obtain a family of nonlinear maximum principles for linear dissipative nonlocal operators, that are general, robust, and versatile. We use these nonlinear bounds to provide transparent proofs of global regularity for critical SQG and critical d-dimensional Burgers equations. In addition we give applications of the nonlinear maximum principle to the global regularity of a slightly dissipative anti-symmetric perturbation of 2D incompressible Euler equations and generalized fractional dissipative 2D Boussinesq equations.
