12-Epi-9-deacetoxyxenicin,new cytotoxic diterpenoid from a Bornean soft coral,Xenia sp.

One new compound, 12-epi-9-deacetoxyxenicin (1) along with a hydroperoxide product, 12-epi-9-deacetoxy-8-hydroperoxyxenicin (2) and two known sesquiterpenoids (3–4) were isolated from a population of Bornean soft coral Xenia sp. The structures of these secondary metabolites were elucidated based on their spectroscopic data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed cytotoxic activity against ATL cell line, S1T. In addition, compound 3 exhibited hyphal inhibition of Lagenidium thermophilum.     

Exo- and endo-Isomers of Plumbylenes Supported by 1,3-Diethers of Calix[4]arene

Calix[4]arene-plumbylene complexes Pb[Calix^t-Bu(O)₂(OR)₂], where R=benzyl, 9-fluorenyl, Si^tBuMe₂, and SiⁱPr₃, have been synthesized by the reaction of Lappert's plumbylene Pb[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ with the corresponding 1,3-diethers of calix[4]arene. The products have been fully characterized by ¹H, ¹³C{¹H}, and ²⁰⁷Pb NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The products adopt two different forms depending on the R groups: the alkyl derivatives were obtained as exo-isomers in which the lead atom resides outside the cavity of the calix[4]arene, while the silyl derivatives were isolated as endo-isomers where the lead atom is situated inside the cavity. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the lead(II) atoms in the exo- and endo-isomers are coordinated by the ethereal oxygen atoms (OR) and the aromatic rings (ArOR), respectively, which are maintained in solution as evidenced by ²⁰⁷Pb NMR studies.

Local liquid velocity measurements in air-water bubbly flow

Local measurements of axial liquid velocity were performed for vertical upward air-water bubbly flow in a 101.6-mm inner-diameter round pipe by using a laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) and a hot-film anemometer (HFA). The data reduction approaches for both the LDA and HFA are discussed in detail. A threshold scheme with the information of local void fraction and velocity distribution in single-phase flow was applied to the LDA to approximately discriminate liquid velocity signals from those of the bubble interface velocity. Furthermore, a formulation was given to account for the effect of the bubble relative velocity on the liquid in the front and wake regions of the bubbles. For the HFA, an amplitude threshold scheme and a slope criterion were used to extract liquid velocity information. To reduce the measurement uncertainty, the experiments were performed in flow conditions where the area-averaged void fraction was less than 20%. The experimental results showed satisfactory agreement between the liquid volumetric flow rates calculated by area integration of the local liquid velocity and void fraction measurements, and the measured value by a magnetic flow meter. Also, the area-averaged relative velocity between the gas and liquid phases obtained from the current measurements agreed well with previous research.

Gas Storage in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract

X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrical resistance measurement on single-walled carbon nan-otube (SWNT) samples prepared by the arc-discharge method are reported. The XRD profile of heat-treated sample indicated that air (oxygen, and/or nitrogen and/or water) can be condensed inside the SWNTs. We also found that the electrical resistance of SWNT soot is significantly affected by exposing to the oxygen gas and humid air.     

Distorted Porphyrins with High Stability: Synthesis and Characteristic Electronic Properties of Mono- and Di-Nuclear Tricarbonyl Rhenium Tetraazaporphyrin Complexes

Mono- and di-nuclear tricarbonyl Re(I) tetraazaporphyrin complexes ( Re₁TAP and Re₂TAP ) are investigated and compared with Re(I) phthalocyanine complexes ( Re₁Pc and Re₂Pc ). Although Re₂Pc is unstable in polar solvents, and easily undergoes demetallation reaction, the coordination of the TAP ligand significantly improves the tolerance toward polar solvents, affording more stability to Re₂TAP . Additionally, the incorporation of [Re(CO)₃]⁺ unit(s) and the TAP ligand results in remarkable positive shifts in both oxidation and reduction potentials. Consequently, the more positive oxidation potentials of the ReTAP complexes significantly increase the tolerance toward oxidation, while the reduction potential indicates that Re₂TAP is suitable for a soluble electron acceptor. In contrast to Re₁Pc and Re₂Pc , Re₁TAP and Re₂TAP show unique broad Q bands, which can be attributed to the admixture of the π-π* and metal-to-ligand charge transfer characters, owing to the lowered π orbital energy in the TAP complexes. This study is useful for controlling electronic properties and realizing high stability in Pc analogues.
