Cognitive style refers to differences that can be perceived in individuals due to differing cognitive structures. There has been a large amount of research on how cognitive style affects managerial decision-making, particularly in the context of management information systems, but little or no attempt to relate these findings to operational research. This paper reviews the findings of cognitive-style research from the perspective of operational research, and draws a number of useful inferences concerning the matching of OR aids to managers, the presentation of information and recommendations, the use and acceptance of OR, and the structure of OR groups. Further, it is argued that cognitive-style findings help to give a justification to the move towards ‘soft’ approaches to analysis.  相似文献

We have performed high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) image simulations to qualitatively assess the visibility of various structural defects in ultrathin gate oxides of MOSFET devices, and to quantitatively examine the accuracy of HRTEM in performing gate oxide metrology. Structural models contained crystalline defects embedded in an amorphous 16-A-thick gate oxide. Simulated images were calculated for structures viewed in cross section. Defect visibility was assessed as a function of specimen thickness and defect morphology, composition, size, and orientation. Defect morphologies included asperities lying on the substrate surface, as well as "bridging" defects connecting the substrate to the gate electrode. Measurements of gate oxide thickness extracted from simulated images were compared to actual dimensions in the model structure to assess TEM accuracy for metrology. The effects of specimen tilt, specimen thickness, objective lens defocus, and coefficient of spherical aberration (Cs) on measurement accuracy were explored for nominal 10-A gate oxide thickness. Results from this work suggest that accurate metrology of ultrathin gate oxides (i.e., limited to several percent error) is feasible on a consistent basis only by using a Cs-corrected microscope. However, fundamental limitations remain for characterizing defects in gate oxides using HRTEM, even with the new generation of Cs-corrected microscopes.  相似文献

Murine epidermal growth factor (m-EGF), a polypeptide produced as a chromatographically homogeneous peak on diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) cellulose by the method of Savage and co-workers, and characterised as a single compound, has been shown by ourselves and several other groups to be a mixture. The present contribution extends our previously reported work and discusses the separation of this material, termed DEAE-m-EGF, into its components by preparative ion-pair reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) on C18 mu Bondapak in quantities up to 50 mg per run. Isocratic elution was used and the mobile phase was acetonitrile-water (26:74, v/v, 0.04 M in triethylamine acetate); pH was 5.6, temperature 40 degrees C, and detection was by ultraviolet absorption at 254 nm, and (for some runs) by differential refractometry. Seven significant peaks, four major, three minor, were detected. Of the major peaks, two designated alpha- and beta-EGF, constituted 70% of the total mass and were the most important to our work. Each of the eluted peaks was recovered by lyophilisation, and this product checked for homogeneity by ion-pair RP-HPLC on a C18 mu Bondapak analytical column, with ultraviolet detection as before. All recovered peaks were found to be homogeneous by this criterion. These chromatographically homogeneous compounds were investigated by modern physicochemical instrumentation to determine their structure. The molecular weight of each of the species was determined by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. High-field proton magnetic resonance at 270 MHz provided structural and conformational information. Polarimetry and ultraviolet absorption were also used to characterise the compound. alpha-EGF, for example, had a molecular weight of 6040 corresponding to the 53 amino acid residue peptide previously designated EGF; beta-EGF had a molecular weight of 5930. This molecular weight differential of 110 suggested the hypothesis that beta-EGF was a 52 residue peptide corresponding to alpha-EGF minus the terminal asparagine at position 1. Proton magnetic resonance difference spectroscopy (beta spectrum subtracted from alpha) provided powerful confirmatory evidence for this hypothesis. All materials recovered from RP-HPLC were tested in the sheep and found to retain their biological activity.  相似文献

We report the development of a novel form of diffraction-based 3D microscopy to overcome resolution barriers inherent in high-resolution electron microscopy and tomography. By combining coherent electron diffraction with the oversampling phasing method, we show that the 3D structure of a nanocrystal can be determined ab initio at a resolution of 1 A from 29 simulated noisy diffraction patterns. This new form of microscopy can be used to image the 3D structures of nanocrystals and noncrystalline samples, with resolution limited only by the quality of sample diffraction.  相似文献

A method for the practical determination of the absolute concentration of single (a1delta(g)) oxygen is discussed. The method is based on sensitive off-axis integrated-cavity-output spectroscopy (ICOS). Off-axis ICOS allows narrowband, continuous-wave lasers to be used in conjunction with optical cavities to record sensitive absorption measurements. The details of the method as well as spectroscopic data confirming the first observation of the (1, 0) band of the b1sigma(g)(+) - a1delta(g) Noxon system are presented. The absolute transition probabilities for the b1sigma(g)(+) - a1delta(g) Noxon system, which are not known precisely from experiments, are determined by quantum chemistry theory.  相似文献

John Cowley and his group at Arizona State University pioneered the use of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for high-resolution imaging. Three decades ago they achieved images showing the crystal unit cell content at better than 4 angstroms resolution. Over the years, this achievement has inspired improvements in resolution that have enabled researchers to pinpoint the positions of heavy atom columns within the cell. More recently, this ability has been extended to light atoms as resolution has improved. Sub-angstrom resolution has enabled researchers to image the columns of light atoms (carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen) that are present in many complex structures. By using sub-angstrom focal-series reconstruction of the specimen exit surface wave to image columns of cobalt, oxygen, and lithium atoms in a transition metal oxide structure commonly used as positive electrodes in lithium rechargeable batteries, we show that the range of detectable light atoms extends to lithium. HRTEM at sub-angstrom resolution will provide the essential role of experimental verification for the emergent nanotech revolution. Our results foreshadow those to be expected from next-generation TEMs with CS-corrected lenses and monochromated electron beams.  相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are isolated and recovered with acceptable percent recoveries from human serum via liquid-liquid extraction and column chromatographic cleanup and fractionation with quantitation using capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with electron capture negative ion and selected ion monitoring. PBDEs are found in unspiked serum. An alternative sample preparation approach is developed using sheep serum that utilizes a formic acid pre-treatment followed by reversed-phase solid-phase disk extraction and normal-phase solid-phase cleanup using acidified silica gel that yields>50% recoveries. When these percent recoveries are combined with a minimized phase ratio for human serum and very low instrument detection limits, method detection limits below 500 parts-per-trillion are realized.  相似文献
