Strong instability of solitary waves for nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations and generalized Boussinesq equations

We study here instability problems of standing waves for the nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations and solitary waves for the generalized Boussinesq equations. It is shown that those special wave solutions may be strongly unstable by blowup in finite time, depending on the range of the wave's frequency or the wave's speed of propagation and on the nonlinearity.     

Radiation sterilization of enzyme hybrids with biodegradable polymers

Ionizing radiations, which have already been utilized for the sterilization of medical supplies as well as gas fumigation, should be the final candidate to decontaminate “hybrid” biomaterials containing bio-active materials including enzymes because irradiation induces neither heat nor substances affecting the quality of the materials and our health. In order to check the feasibility of ⁶⁰Co-gamma rays on these materials, we selected commercial proteases including papain and bromelain hybridized with commercial activated chitosan beads and demonstrated that these enzyme-hybrids suspended in water showed the significant radiation durability of more than twice as much as free enzyme solution at 25-kGy irradiation. Enhanced thermal and storage stability of the enzyme hybrids were not affected by the same dose level of irradiation, either, indicating that commercial irradiation sterilization method is applicable to enzyme hybrids without modification.     

Secondary hypervalent I(III)...O interactions: synthesis and structure of hypervalent complexes of diphenyl-lambda3-iodanes with 18-crown-6

Reported here for the first time are the synthesis and characterization of supramolecular complexes between diaryl-lambda(3)-iodanes and 18-crown-6 (18C6). Slow evaporation of solvents afforded 1:1 and 2:1 complexes between Ph(2)IBF(4) and 18C6 as stable crystals, depending on the conditions. X-ray crystal structures of these complexes indicated that each iodine atom contacts with the three adjacent oxygen atoms of 18C6 through two hypervalent secondary bonding and a weak interaction. (1)H NMR analyses and CSI-MS spectra showed that, in dichloromethane solution, Ph(2)IBF(4) exclusively forms the 1:1 complex with 18C6 (binding constant K(a), 1.02 x 10(3) M(-)(1)). The binding constants decrease with the increased solvent donor ability (Gutmann's DN). Changing the heteroatom ligand from BF(4) to the less nucleophilic PF(6) and AsF(6) increased the binding constant by about six times. Substitution of an electron-withdrawing group onto the para position of Ph(2)IBF(4) tends to increase in the complex stability. A linear Hammett relationship (rho = 0.59) between log K(a) and sigma(p)(+) values of substituents indicates that the diaryl-lambda(3)-iodanes with electropositive iodine(III) interact more efficiently with 18C6. Decreased binding magnitude was measured with 15C5, dibenzo-18C6, dibenzo-21C7, and dibenzo-30C10.     

A new stereoselective synthesis of 2-subsdtituted 1,3-bis(trimethylsilyl)propene derivatives and their conversion to cyclopentane and cyclohexane derivatives

Ester $\text{2}$ on treatment with sodium salt of sulfone or sulfoxide afforded 2-substituted 1,3-bis(trimethylsily)propene $\text{3}$ in good yield, from which cyclopentane and cyclohexane derivatives bearing a trimethylsilyl group in the molecules were synthesized.     

Multiplex amplified product-length polymorphism analysis of 36 mitochondrial single-nucleotide polymorphisms for haplogrouping of East Asian populations

We present a reliable, rapid, and economical multiplex amplified product-length polymorphism (APLP) method for analyzing the haplogroup-diagnostic mitochondrial single-nucleotide polymorphisms (mtSNPs) in East Asian populations. By examining only 36 haplogroup-specific mtSNPs in the coding region by using four 9-multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and subsequent electrophoresis, we could safely assign 1815 individuals from 8 populations of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Germans to 45 relevant haplogroups. This multiplex APLP analysis of coding-region mtSNPs for haplogrouping is especially useful not only for molecular phylogenetic studies but also for large-scale association studies due to its rapid and economical nature. This is the first panel of mtSNPs in the coding region to be used for haplogrouping of East Asian populations.     

Stereoselective acid-catalyzed homoallylic rearrangement of cyclopropylsilylmethanols: an efficient route to Z-homoallyl derivatives

Treatment of cyclopropylsilylmethanols derived from cyclopropyl silyl ketones with acid catalyst gives the corresponding silyl-substituted homoallyl derivatives in high yields with good stereoselectivity, independent of the substituents on the cyclopropyl ring. Cyclopropylsilylmethanols having a n-, s-butyl or phenyl group on the carbinyl carbon react to afford the E-homoallyl derivatives selectively. On the other hand, the reaction of cyclopropylsilylmethanols having a tert-butyl group gives Z-isomers exclusively. The following protiodesilylation of the resulting homoallyl derivatives proceeds with retention of configuration.     

Classical trajectory calculations of intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution. I. Methanol-water complex

Intramolecular vibrational energy redistributions of the O-H stretching (nuOH) vibration for the methanol monomer and its water complex, the methanol-water dimer, are investigated by using ab initio full-dimensional classical trajectory calculations. For the methanol monomer, in the high-energy regime of the 5nuOH overtone, the time dependence of the normal-mode energies indicates that energy flowed from the initial excited O-H stretching mode to the C-H stretching mode. This result confirms the experimental observation of energy redistribution between the O-H and C-H stretching vibrations [L. Lubich et al., Faraday Discuss. 102, 167 (1995)]. Furthermore, a lot of dynamical information in the time domain is contained in the power spectra, whose density is given by the Fourier transformation of the total momentum obtained from trajectory calculations. For the methanol-water hydrogen-bonded complex, at the high-energy level of the 5nuOH overtone, the calculated power spectrum shows considerable splitting and broadening, indicating significant energy redistribution through strong coupling between the O-H stretching vibration and other vibrations. It is thus clear that the A-H...B hydrogen-bond formation facilitates energy redistribution subsequent to the vibrational excitation of the hydrogen-bonded A-H stretching mode.     

A new method for the synthesis of some 9-β-D-arabinofuranosylpurines by a combination of chemical and enzymatic reactions

An enzymatic transarabinosylation between 2-chlorohypoxanthine and 1-β-$\text{D}$-arabinofuranosyluracil gave 9-β-$\text{D}$-arabinofuranosyl-2-chlorohypoxanthine which was chemically converted to 9-β-$\text{D}$-arabinofuranosylguanine and its derivatives.     

Total synthesis of cis-solamin and its inhibitory action with bovine heart mitochondrial complex I

A convergent total synthesis of cis-solamin (1a) and its diastereomer (1b) was accomplished. A key reaction of this approach was the use of VO(acac)₂-catalyzed diastereoselective epoxidation of (Z)-bis-homoallylic alcohol 3 followed by spontaneous cyclization for the cis-THF ring formation. By comparison of the optical rotation of the two possible diastereomers, it is suggested that the absolute configuration of natural cis-solamin is 1a. Inhibitory action of synthetic 1a and 1b with bovine heart mitochondrial complex I are reported.
