Synthesis of Porphyrinquinone and Doubly‐Fused Diporphyrin Quinone Through Oxidation of Diarylporphyrins Using a Hypervalent Iodine Compound

Treatment of a meso‐diarylporphyrin with PhI(OAc)₂ in the presence of BF₃ ? OEt₂ and propionic acid affords the corresponding porphyrinquinone in a high yield (91%). A novel quinone derived from meso‐meso β–β doubly‐fused diporphyrin was obtained as the sole byproduct (16% yield), which exhibits strong panchromatic absorption between 300 and 1000 nm. It has a low HOMO‐LUMO gap owing to expanded and low‐symmetry π‐planes.     

Reproducing Kernels for Iterated Parabolic Operators on the Upper Half Space with Application to Polyharmonic Bergman Spaces

We consider parabolic operators of fractional order and their iterates on the upper half space of the euclidean space. We deal with Hilbert spaces of solutions of those parabolic equations. We shall show, in this note, the existence of reproducing kernels and give a formula by using their fundamental solutions. As an application, we also discuss the polyharmonic Bergman spaces and give their reproducing kernels by using the Poisson kernel on the upper half space.     

Aerobic oxidation of alcohols using bismuth bromide as a catalyst

We developed an environmentally friendly method for aerobic oxidation of alcohols using a commercially available, relatively benign bismuth salt as a catalyst. We found that the catalytic combination of BiBr₃ with nitric acid is key for enhancing the reactivity. The reaction proceeds well under air, making the use of pure oxygen unnecessary. Each of the primary or secondary alcohols tested was oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones using this protocol.     

Control of chain ends of polyesters in polycondensation of AA and BB monomers by use of solid‐phase reagent

For selective synthesis of linear polyester having a functional group at one end, polycondensation between 1,4‐butanediol ( 1a ) and sebacoyl chloride ( 2a ) and between 1,12‐dodecanediol ( 1b ) and isophthaloyl chloride ( 2b ) was conducted in the presence of oxime resin or oxime silica gel, followed by cleavage of the formed polyester from the solid‐phase support with aniline. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectra and ¹H NMR spectra of the cleaved polyester showed that the products contained not only polyester with anilide at one end ( poly 1 ), but also polyester with anilides at both ends ( poly 2 ). The product ratio of poly 1 to poly 2 ( poly 1 / poly 2 ) was dependent on monomers, monomer concentration, feed ratio of monomer to oxime moiety in the support, oxime content in the support, reaction solvent, and the nature of the support. Polyester with a high poly 1 / poly 2 ratio of 81/21 and moderate molecular weight (M_n = 1430 g/mol) was obtained by polycondensation of 1b and 2b in the presence of oxime silica gel in dichloromethane. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Internal radiocesium contamination of adults and children in Fukushima 7 to 20 months after the Fukushima NPP accident as measured by extensive whole-body-counter surveys

The Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP accident contaminated the soil of densely-populated regions in Fukushima Prefecture with radioactive cesium, which poses significant risks of internal and external exposure to the residents. If we apply the knowledge of post-Chernobyl accident studies, internal exposures in excess of a few mSv/y would be expected to be frequent in Fukushima.Extensive whole-body-counter surveys (n = 32,811) carried out at the Hirata Central Hospital between October, 2011 and November, 2012, however show that the internal exposure levels of residents are much lower than estimated. In particular, the first sampling-bias-free assessment of the internal exposure of children in the town of Miharu, Fukushima, shows that the ¹³⁷Cs body burdens of all children (n = 1,383, ages 6–15, covering 95% of children enrolled in town-operated schools) were below the detection limit of 300 Bq/body in the fall of 2012. These results are not conclusive for the prefecture as a whole, but are consistent with results obtained from other municipalities in the prefecture, and with prefectural data.     

Formation of double helix self-assembled monolayers of ethynylhelicene oligomer disulfides on gold surfaces

Optically active ethynylhelicene pentamers and hexamers linked by disulfide bonds were synthesized. They formed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with double helix structure on gold surfaces, which were analyzed by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IR-RAS), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and circular dichroism (CD). Double helix SAMs could be formed on gold surfaces either from double helices or random coils in solution. The double helices on the surface were more stable than in solution. This result suggested the presence of strong intercomplex interactions between double helix complexes on the surface.
