Search for anomalous interaction mean free paths of charge, 2≦Z≦18 projectile fragments in emulsions exposed to 1.8 A GeV40Ar ions

⁴⁰Ar-emulsion interactions are studied, to investigate the question of anomalons, in twoG- 5 emulsion stacks. In about 4600 primary interactions, projectile fragments of Z≧2 for all generations have been followed until they interact or leave the stack. After careful estimation of charges of these fragments, variation of their mean free paths is studied as a function of distance from the preceding interaction. Generation effect,N _h dependence and production angle effect are investigated. In addition multi-chain events are analysed separately. Our results do not show anomalons at the 6% level and are consistent with non-occurrence of anomalons. However, this experiment is not sensitive enough to rule out anomalons (with a mfp of the order of 2 to 3 cm) produced at about 1% (or less) level.     

Preparation and characterization of some stereochemically rigid seven-coordinate η-cyclopentadienyltris(N,N-dialkyldithiocarbamato)hafnium(IV) complexes

Summary N,N-Dialkyldithiocarbametohafnium(IV) complexes of the type -CpHf(S₂CNR₂)₃, (R = Me or Et) have been prepared in nonaqueous media by reacting dichlorodicyclopentadienylhafnium(IV) with sodium salts of substituted dithiocarbamic acids. Conductance and i.r. studies show that these complexes are nonelectrolytes in which all of the dithiocarbamate ligands are bidentate. A coordination number of seven may be assigned to hafnium(IV) in these complexes, 'H n.m.r. spectra of the complexes in CDCI₃ at ambient temperature (30°) indicate that the metal centered rearrangement and the S₂C N bond rotation are both slow on the n.m.r. time scale. A capped octahedron configuration is suggested for these complexes.Author to whore all correspondence should be addressed.     

Pseudohalide derivatives of (η -cyclopentadienyl-η-methylcyclopentadienyl) titanium (IV)

Summary Pseudohalide complexes of the (-cpL)TiXZ type (where cp = cyclopentadienyl, L = -McCs₅-H₄ and X = N3, NCS, NCO or NCSe) have been prepared in aqueous and nonaqueous media and characterized by elemental analyses, i.r. and n.m.r. spectroscopy. I.r. spectroscopy shows that NCS, NCO and NCSe are bonded to the titanium atom through nitrogen in these complexes which are thus true isothiocyanato, isocyanato and isoselenocyanato derivatives respectively.     

Gamma and π0 production by 4 GeV/cπ+p interactions

Inclusive data for the production of γ rays and π⁰ are presented from an experiment with a 4 GeV/cπ⁺ beam, using a track-sensitive target. The results are compared with data at other energies and with π⁺and π^? distributions.     

Gas chromatographic determination of residual hydrazine and morpholine in boiler feed water and steam condensates

Summary Hydrazine, an oxygen scavenger in boiler water, was derivatised to the corresponding acetone azine and determined at the ng ml^–1 level by gas chromatography. Morpholine, a corrosion inhibitor used in steam boilers, was estimated either directly (if >2.0 g ml^–1) or by quantitative preconcentration (0.1 ng – 2.0 g ml^–1). To obtain symmetrical peaks for these amines, the column packing was coated with KOH. Use of a nitrogen-specific detector improved accuracy of estimation of hydrazine and morpholine, giving a RSD of 1.9–3.6%. Chromatographic analysis of these amines in boiler feed water and steam condensate samples collected from boilers servicing a petroleum refinery is described. Environmental safety regulations calls for monitoring of hydrazine and the methods developed can easily be adapted for this purpose.     

Flow effects in 84Kr induced collisions in emulsion at 0.95 GeV per nucleon

Using emulsion detector the collective flow signals in inelastic interactions of ⁸⁴Kr nuclei with Ag(Br) at 950 MeV/nucleon are studied. A transverse momentum analysis is performed to determine the reaction plane. The bounce-off of spectator fragments is observed. In azimuthal distributions relative to the reaction plane squeeze-out and side-splash of participants are seen. Received: 27 September 1999     

On two-body channels in the interactions of negative pions with protons in the few GeV region

A compilation on the reactionsπ ^? p→π ^? p,π ^? p→ρ ⁰ n andπ ^? ρ→p ^? ρ at nine laboratory momenta between 1·59 and 4·16 GeV/c is presented and certain common features of these channels brought out. Relevant basic parameters for production angular distribution are obtained and their values interpreted. It is found that the diffraction peaks do not shrink as the centre of mass energy increases.     

Electron production by 4.0 GeV/cπ+p interactions

We have investigated electron production in 4.0 GeV/cπ⁺pinteractions. Limits to direct electron pair production are measured and an example of ?⁰ or ω⁰ decay to e⁺e^? is observed. The ratio of the number of singly produced electrons to the total number of charged pions is less than 6 × 10^-5 (at the 95% confidence level).     

On the emission of fast and slow target fragments from Kr–AgBr interactions at 0.95 GeV/A

Multiplicity distributions of secondary charged particles coming out of ⁸⁴Kr–AgBr interaction at 0.95 GeV/A have been reported. Angular distributions of fast and slow target fragments have also been studied. The sharp forward peak in the angular distribution of knocked out protons has further been analyzed in the light of intermittency and scaled factorial moment.
