High‐Pressure Synthesis of a Nitrogen‐Rich Inclusion Compound ReN8⋅x N2 with Conjugated Polymeric Nitrogen Chains

A nitrogen‐rich compound, ReN₈?x N₂, was synthesized by a direct reaction between rhenium and nitrogen at high pressure and high temperature in a laser‐heated diamond anvil cell. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction revealed that the crystal structure, which is based on the ReN₈ framework, has rectangular‐shaped channels that accommodate nitrogen molecules. Thus, despite a very high synthesis pressure, exceeding 100 GPa, ReN₈?x N₂ is an inclusion compound. The amount of trapped nitrogen (x) depends on the synthesis conditions. The polydiazenediyl chains [?N=N?]_∞ that constitute the framework have not been previously observed in any compound. Ab initio calculations on ReN₈?x N₂ provide strong support for the experimental results and conclusions.     

The radiation of atomic negative ions

A survey is made of the experimental research program at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory covering the approved experimental proposals. These experiments are divided into physics topics and a comparison is made of the kinematic ranges of the measurements and the techniques used.     

Single‐crystal diffraction at the Extreme Conditions beamline P02.2: procedure for collecting and analyzing high‐pressure single‐crystal data

Fast detectors employed at third‐generation synchrotrons have reduced collection times significantly and require the optimization of commercial as well as customized software packages for data reduction and analysis. In this paper a procedure to collect, process and analyze single‐crystal data sets collected at high pressure at the Extreme Conditions beamline (P02.2) at PETRA III, DESY, is presented. A new data image format called `Esperanto' is introduced that is supported by the commercial software package CrysAlis^Pro (Agilent Technologies UK Ltd). The new format acts as a vehicle to transform the most common area‐detector data formats via a translator software. Such a conversion tool has been developed and converts tiff data collected on a Perkin Elmer detector, as well as data collected on a MAR345/555, to be imported into the CrysAlis^Pro software. In order to demonstrate the validity of the new approach, a complete structure refinement of boron‐mullite (Al₅BO₉) collected at a pressure of 19.4 (2) GPa is presented. Details pertaining to the data collections and refinements of B‐mullite are presented.     

Magnetic resonance imaging of bone marrow metastasis with fluid-fluid levels from small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder

Fluid-fluid levels have been reported as an extremely infrequent and non-specific condition in many benign and malignant bone lesions. We present the first reported MRI findings of bone marrow metastasis with fluid-fluid levels from small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder to the lumbar spine. Radiologists should be aware of the MRI appearance of these extraordinary lesions in order to provide a complete differential diagnosis and to guide clinicians in adequate treatment.
