Chemical profile by LC–MS/MS,GC/MS and antioxidant activities of the essential oils and crude extracts of two Euphorbia species

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of two Euphorbia species. The major component of the fatty acid compositions obtained from the petroleum ether extracts was identified as palmitic acid for Euphorbia gaillardotii and Euphorbia macroclada. The main constituents of the essential oils were identified as arachidic acid for E. gaillardotii and tetratetracontane for E. macroclada. Among the 27 studied compounds, hesperidin, rutin, hyperoside and quinic, malic, gallic and tannic acids were found to be the most abundant compounds in the two Euphorbia species. The methanol extracts of E. gaillardotii and E. macroclada showed strong antioxidant activity in all tested methods. Particularly, IC₅₀ values of E. macroclada methanol extract that was the richest in terms of total phenolic-flavonoid contents were found to be lower than α-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene in β-carotene bleaching, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free and ABTS cation radical scavenging methods.     

Nuclear-Electron Overhauser Effect in MC800 Liquid Asphalt Solutions

Experimental results on the extrapolated ultimate enhancement factors of o-, m-, and p-xylene protons at 1.53 mT are obtained for MC800 asphalt solutions. The ultimate enhancement factors are found such as ?26.9, ?25.7, and ?11.7 for o-, m-, and p-xylene, respectively. These results show that the solvent proton Overhauser effect cannot reach the extrapolated enhancement of ?330 in the extreme narrowing case because of occurrence of small scalar interactions in addition to the dipole–dipole interactions between solvent protons and asphalt electrons. The ortho, meta, and para positions of the –CH₃ group change the nature of the interactions. The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal enhancements exhibit a sensitive behavior depending on the chemical environment differing from isomer to isomer. The solvation or association of asphalt in xylene isomers at room temperature is revealed. Quantum chemical calculations for the xylene isomers with the electronic and optical properties; absorption wavelengths, excitation energy, atomic charges, dipole moment and frontier molecular orbital energies, molecular electrostatic potential; are carried out using the density functional theory (DFT) method (B3LYP) with the 6-311G(d,p) basis set by the standard Gaussian 09 software package program. The relative importance of scalar and translational dipolar interaction parameters determined in dynamic nuclear polarization experiments is explained by the electronic structure of HOMO–LUMO of the xylene isomers.     

Unexpected formation of β, meso-directly linked diporphyrins under Adler–Longo reaction conditions

Unexpected formation of β, meso-directly linked diporphyrin products has been described in the reactions of β-formyl porphyrins with pyrrole under Adler–Longo reaction conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicates that β-dipyrromethane substituted porphyrin structure is the crucial intermediate for the formation of diporphyrin product.     

Self‐healing of poly(propylene oxide)‐polybenzoxazine thermosets by photoinduced coumarine dimerization

In this work, a self‐healing strategy for poly(propylene oxide)s bearing coumarine‐benzoxazine units (PPO‐CouBenz)s based on light induced coumarine dimerization reactions is described. Four different types of poly(propylene oxide) amines with molecular weights ranging from 440 to 5000 Da were reacted with formaldehyde and 4‐methyl‐7‐hydroxycoumarin to yield desired (PPO‐CouBenz)s. The crosslinked polymer films were prepared by solvent casting of various compositions of PPO‐CouBenzs in chloroform followed by thermal ring opening reaction of benzoxazine groups at 210–240 °C. Thermal curing and thermal stability of the initial PPOs and final products were investigated. Using allyl benzoxazine in the formulation, it was demonstrated that the toughness of the films was improved. A Comment on Change of Nusselt Number Sign in a Channel Flow Filled by a Fluid-Saturated Porous Medium with Constant Heat Flux Boundary Conditions

The aim of this Letter is to show that, the Nusselt number sign might be changed without changing of heat transfer direction at the wall of channels, even for flows without viscous dissipation.     

Thermally induced fixed diradical generation on solid supports for surface‐initiated polymerization

A method is presented for generation of all surface‐bound radicals on solid polymer surfaces. Thus, secondary amide group of newly synthesized crosslinking comonomer, methacryloyloxyethyl methacrylamide was determined as versatile precursor for generation fixed diradicals on solid microspheres, obtained by copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) in aqueous suspension. Nitrosoation of the secondary amide groups on the microbeads and followed thermolysis above 90 °C was demonstrated to give surface‐bound radicals, capable of initiating polymerization of vinyl monomers, such as; styrene, MMA, N‐vinyl formamide, and N‐vinyl, 2‐pyrrolidone, as evidenced by H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimeter techniques. Appreciable grafting yields (55.1%–286.1%) and low free‐homopolymer formation (7.2%–19.7%) were noted within 6 h of the grafting at 100 °C in each case. This strategy involving the use of amide functional crosslinker seemed to be generally applicable to generate surface‐bound radicals for surface‐initiated polymerization from various solid substrates. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new reagent for the synthesis of [26]hexaphyrin: N-sulfonyl aldimine

The selective synthesis of [26]hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1) has been achieved by the reaction of meso-substituted tripyrrane and N-sulfonyl aldimine. The protocol is simple and requires only a catalytic amount of copper(II) triflate under mild reaction conditions.
