Field Structure in the Cross Section of a Ferrite Inhomogeneous Anisotropic Insert of a Rectangular Waveguide

We develop a physico-mathematical model describing excitation and distribution of electromagnetic waves in an anisotropic waveguide or resonator in the three-dimensional case. We develop a theoretical approach for discretization of the Maxwell equations in an arbitrary medium in the presence of bounding walls of a waveguide or resonator. The resulting system of linear algebraic equations for the electric-field components in an inhomogeneous anisotropic medium is solved by the method of biconjugate gradient. The results of calculating the electric field lines in the cross section of an anisotropic insert of a rectangular waveguide are presented.     

Reactivity of sites on Al2O3 surface modified by Ni

It has been established that CO oxidation with excess O₂ on Ni/Al₂O₃ forms an inhomogeneous NiO contact surface that smoothes critical effects in the sharp reactivity change.     

Correlation corrections based on the Schrödinger equation with a local potential

A compromise version of calculation of the ground state electronic energy is proposed that combines both the density functional theory and the wave function formalism. Single-particle orbitals and energies are determined by solving the Kohn-Sham equations with a local effective potential, which depends on the parameters determined by the variational principle. Correlation corrections are calculated using the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory in the zero-order approximation of the Möller-Plesset theory. The specific features of the expressions for the corrections to the wave function and the energy determined in terms of the Kohn-Sham orbitals are considered. This approach, in contrast to the well-known optimized effective potential method, can be applied with equal computational expenditures to both atoms and molecules. A comparative analysis for 20 helium-like atoms showed that the scheme proposed provides better agreement with the “exact” values of the energy in the second order of the perturbation theory in comparison with the results obtained using the conventional exchange-correlation potentials BLYP and PW91. A similar trend is also observed for diatomic hydrides (from LiH to FH), although, in contrast to the atoms, the deviations from the experimental estimates of the energy are less systematic.     

Xanthones from the roots ofSwertia iberica

From the roots ofSwertia iberica, together with the previously known swertiaperennin decussatin, gentiakochianin, and norswertianin, we have isolated two new xanthones — isogentiakochianin and swertiaiberin. On the basis of UV, IR, PMR, and mass spectroscopy, the structure of 1,3,8-trihydroxy-7-methoxyxanthone is proposed for isogentiakochianin, and that of 1,2,3-trihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyanthone for swertiaiberin.All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Medicinal Plants, Moscow. The effect of nanosized titania-silica film composition on the photostability of adsorbed methylene blue dye

The effect of nanosized porous films (average density 10 g/m²) of TiO₂. TiO₂/SiO₂, and SiO₂ on the photostability of adsorbed methylene blue (MB) dye during UV irradiation in air was investigated by optical spectroscopy and laser-induced mass spectrometry. The effectiveness of the photodecomposition of MB decreases in the order TiO₂ > TiO₂/SiO₂ > SiO₂ with rate constants 1E-2, 0.6E-2, and 0.3E-2 min⁻¹ respectively. A mechanism including the participation of both excited states of the dye molecules and photoexcited titanium dioxide is proposed for the photodecolorization of MB adsorbed on the surface of the investigated films. __________ Translated from Teoreticheskaya i éksperimental’naya Khimiya, Vol. 43, No. 4, pp. 220–225, July–August, 2007.     

Microwaves and cellular immunity. II. Immunostimulating effects of microwaves and naturally occurring antioxidant nutrients

The effect of 8.15-18 GHz (1 Hz within) microwave radiation at a power density of 1 microW/cm2 on the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) production and immune response was tested. A single 5 h whole-body exposure induced a significant increase in TNF production in peritoneal macrophages and splenic T cells. The mitogenic response in T lymphocytes increased after microwave exposure. The activation of cellular immunity was observed within 3 days after exposure. The diet containing lipid-soluble nutrients (beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol and ubiquinone Q9) increased the activity of macrophages and T cells from irradiated mice. These results demonstrate that irradiation with low-power density microwaves stimulates the immune potential of macrophages and T cells, and the antioxidant treatment enhances the effect of microwaves, in particular at later terms, when the effect of irradiation is reduced.

The following substances have been isolated from an acetone extract ofFerula gigantea B. Fedtsch.: a coumarin — umbelliferone, C₉H₆O₂, mp 230–233°C; and sesquiterpene lactones — talassin A, C₂₅H₃₀O₇, mp 188–191°C; malaphyllinin, C₂₄H₂₄O₇, mp 231–235°C; malaphyll, C₂₉H₃₂O₉, mp 212–213°C; and malaphyllin, C₂₆H₂₈O₉, mp 216–218°C. Alkaloids of a new type fromSophora alopecuroides L.

Summary The structures of aloperine and allylaloperine (fromSophora alopecuroides L.) — alkaloids of a new structural type for the genusSophora — have been established by chemical and spectral methods. A number of parameters, NMR spectra, and mass spectra characterizing this class of compounds has been obtained. Titrimetric Determination of Furosemide Using Aqueous–Micellar Solutions of Surfactants

The solubility and acid–base properties of 4-chloro-N-(2-furylmethyl)-5-sulfamoylanthranilic acid (furosemide) were studied in aqueous–micellar solutions of surfactants of different nature. Conditions of the determination of furosemide by acid–base titration in a micellar solution of tridecylpyridinium bromide were found.
