Adaptive local grid refinement algorithms for finite-element collocation

An adaptive grid refinement procedure allows accurate solutions to advection-dominated, time-dependent flows using finite-element collocation. The technique relies on a data structure that is readily amenable to parallel computing. The paper discusses computational aspects of the method.     

Cross-correlation in flow-injection analysis with parallel flow streams and amperometric detection

Cross-correlation was implemented for flow-injection analysis by using two parallel flow lines, each with amperometric detectors, and driven by peristaltic pumps. One flow line was used to generate the reference signal for an analog correlator circuit and the other to generate the analyte signal. Cross-correlation was performed by multiplying these signals together at a time delay of zero, followed by low pass filtering. Using dopamine as a test system, improvements in signal-to-noise ratios of about two orders of magnitude were found for the correlation signal over the direct measurement of the electrode current.     

Bis(amino acid) derivatives of 1,4-diamino-2-butyne that adopt a C2-symmetric turn conformation

1,4-Diamino-2-butyne was prepared from 1,4-dichloro-2-butyne via 1,4-diazido-2-butyne. Bis(amino acid) derivatives of 1,4-diamino-2-butyne having the general structure (Boc-Xxx-NHCH2C[triple bond])2 (Xxx = Ala, Phe and Met) were prepared and examined by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Using chemical shift, coupling constant and DMSO titration data it is found that these compounds adopt a C2-symmetric turn conformation featuring two intramolecular hydrogen bonds.

Some observations on carbon paste electrodes in ac voltammetry

Phase-sensitive alternating current (a.c.) voltammetric techniques were used to examine the background current at carbon paste electrodes. Several different mulling agents were used for the pastes. The available potential span depends on the mulling agent; paraffin oil gives the largest span. Peaks in the background current obtained by cyclic a.c. voltammetry are attributed to current arising from surface functional groups. Chemical or electrochemical oxidation of the electrode surface enhanced the peak current. Little evidence of this current could be found in d.c. cyclic voltammograms because it is obscured by charging current. The anodic potential limit is determined by these surface currents. On the cathodic side, dissolved oxygen is reduced in a process which produced two peaks in the a.c. scan. It was shown that the second peak is due to the reduction of hydrogen peroxide to water and a method for the quantitation of H₂O₂ was developed which had a detection limit of a few mg l^?1.     

A recyclable fluorous organocatalyst for Diels-Alder reactions

Chiral fluorous imidazolidinone catalyst 2 provides consistently high enantioselectivities in Diels–Alder reactions of dienes and ,β-unsaturated aldehydes. The catalyst can be readily separated from the reaction products by fluorous solid-phase extraction, and recovered in excellent purity for direct reuse.
