By focusing a high-intensity acoustic wave in liquid helium, we have observed the nucleation of solid helium inside the wave above a certain threshold in amplitude. The nucleation is a stochastic phenomenon. Its probability increases continuously from 0 to 1 in a narrow pressure interval around P(m) + 4.7 bars ( P(m) = 25.3 bars is the melting pressure where liquid and solid helium are in equilibrium). This overpressure is larger by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude than what had been previously observed. Our result strongly supports the recent suggestion by Balibar, Mizusaki, and Sasaki that, in all previous experiments, solid helium nucleated on impurities.  相似文献

We consider the shape of crystals which are soft in the sense that their elastic modulus μ is small compared to their surface tension γ, more precisely μa < γ where a is the lattice spacing. We show that their surface steps penetrate inside the crystal as edge dislocations. As a consequence, these steps are broad with a small energy which we calculate. We also calculate the elastic interaction between steps a distance d apart, which is a 1/d 2 repulsion. We finally calculate the roughening temperatures of successive facets in order to compare with the remarkable shapes of lyotropic crystals recently observed by Pieranski et al. We have studied the nucleation of bubbles in pure superfluid helium-4 at temperatures down to 65 mK. We have found that the nucleation is a stochastic process, and that at temperatures below 600 mK the nucleation rate is independent of temperature. These results are consistent with the assumption that the nucleation takes place via quantum tunneling. The technique of ferromagnetic resonance at 23 GHz has been used to determine the first three anisotropy constants of pure Ni down to 4.2K. A temperature and orientation dependent linewidth has also been observed.  相似文献

We have measured the elasticity of high quality ultrapure ?He single crystals in the low temperature region where supersolidity is supposed to occur. At 20 mK, our results are consistent with elastic coefficients previously measured at 1.2 K. As the temperature increases from 20 to 100 mK, a large softening occurs because dislocations unpin from 3He impurities. In the absence of 3He impurities, dislocations are free to move down to 20 mK; the crystals are soft. The large magnitude of this anomalous softening shows that dislocations form a mobile mosaic structure. It illustrates the remarkable quantum plasticity of ?He crystals.  相似文献
