The emission spectrum of the boundary-layer vapor on the interval 3800–6600 Å is presented for a specimen of asbestos-filled plastic in the air-plasma flow created by an electrodeless high-frequency discharge. The temperature profile in the boundary layer has been measured in the neighborhood of the stagnation point. In the investigation of flow near surfaces with discontinuous changes in the catalytic properties the question arises of the applicability of parabolic boundary and viscous shock layer equations in the neighborhood of the discontinuity. In the present paper, three types of problem are solved in which longitudinal diffusion is taken into account. In the first an insertion with different catalytic properties is placed in the neighborhood of the stagnation point, in the second the discontinuity lines of the catalytic properties are perpendicular to the oncoming flow, while in the third they are parallel. On the main surface and on the insertion surface the heterogeneous catalytic reactions are assumed firstorder reactions with various rate constants whose values vary in a wide range. The data of the solution are compared with the solution obtained using the boundary layer approximation and the regions of influence of the longitudinal diffusion are estimated. Solutions to the problem of the flow of an ideal fluid past a blade or cascade of blades with low blocking factor are found in the framework of the first approximation of the theory of perturbations of the flow past infinitely thin arcs. Problems of correction of the shape of the blades are also considered. Problems associated with the application of perturbation theory in problems of flow past bodies are discussed in Van Dyke's monograph [1]. The present paper includes an example of realization of this theory for the thin curved blades that are widely used in compressor construction. Searches for effective methods for calculating the shape of blades to ensure necessary gas-dynamic properties, for example, a given distribution on the blades of the velocity of separationless flow, led to the appearance of algorithms based on the theory of small perturbations for a thin wing of finite span [2] and a single airfoil in a gas flow [3]. In such an approach, the problem of constructing the required profile can be formulated as a sequence of corrections of the boundary of the flow region with respect to small variations of the boundary values of the flow velocity. The paper contains a general formulation of the linear problem of the correction of the flow boundary, an algorithm for its solution in the case of thin blades in an incompressible flow, and analysis of the obtained solutions. The behavior of a liquid layer moving in a mass-force field on the inner surface of a rotating vertical cylinder is studied experimentally. Free-surface profiles of the liquid moving under these conditions are constructed. An empirical dependence for the mean thickness of the film is obtained in criterial forms. The presence of a hydraulic jump in the lower part of the cylinder behind the entrance of the liquid onto the vertical surface is revealed. Attention is drawn to the appreciable torque which acts on a nonmagnetic body in a ferrofluid when a field is applied. The contribution to the torque made by an external inhomogeneity of the field and the perturbation introduced by the body is considered. It is shown that in fields obtained in practice they may be comparable. A method of calculating the resultant force and the resultant torque is considered. The moment of the forces that act on a cylinder of elliptic section in homogeneous and inhomogeneous fields is calculated.
