Industrial Application of Hybrid Sol-Gel Coatings for the Decoration of Crystal Glassware

The coloration of glass via melting techniques presents some unique problems with respect to the reproducibility, toxicology and economics of certain colors, especially if the market demands are highly variable. This is also the case for consumer products such as crystal glass and tableware. Traditionally, the decoration of crystal glasses is performed by laborious manual techniques, which are costly and do not meet modern market requirements. Alternatively, spraying of colored lacquers is a highly flexible and valuable tool for the development of new products. Sol-gel type hybrid coatings provide several advantages compared to conventional organic systems like high abrasion resistance, almost perfect adhesion, refractive index matching and sufficient stability in dishwashing procedures. The solubility of organic dyes in the hybrid matrix is sufficient for intense colors even at rather low layer thicknesses, which on the other hand convey the high brilliance of the base material. The development of transparent, translucent and opaque hybrid coatings for crystal glass has been completed in the last few years and the production of partially coated articles has started recently. The synthesis and properties of the coating material are reviewed and the industrial process and first market results are also outlined.     

Chemists and Biochemists during the National Socialist Era

Chemistry and biochemistry in Germany was notably affected by the dismissal and emigration of Jewish scientists. The expulsion of Jewish scientists aided to significantly reduce the international regard for German science, particularly in biochemistry, physical chemistry, and quantum chemistry, after 1945. In most cases remaining scientists adjusted quickly after 1933 to the new political circumstances, with a few exceptions. A number of them even actively supported the politics of National Socialism. This fact as well as the common stance to forget the 12 years of National Socialist rule complicated the exchange of international scientific knowledge after 1945 and delayed affiliation of the weakened fields of research to the level of international research.

Selective averaging for the diffusion tensor measurement

The multishot echo planar imaging sequence was often used in the high-resolution diffusion measurements. However, it is susceptible to motion artifacts because of the requirements of combining the raw data from different acquisitions into one complete k-space data set. Conventional solutions used cardiac gating but greatly extended the total acquisition time. Here we propose a selective averaging algorithm based on the information in the navigator echoes. The data were sampled continuously without cardiac gating. Contributions contaminated by motion were detected by a thresholding algorithm and were discarded during postprocessing. The data were then averaged in the modulus or complex format. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data with isotropic spatial resolution were acquired in phantom as well as from two normal volunteers. The information in the navigator echoes proved to be a good indicator for the extent of motion contamination. Differences were noticed between modulus and complex averaging in DTI quantification, but both showed reduced artifact and improved signal-to-noise ratio.
