Differential inhibition of postnatal brain,spinal cord and body growth by a growth hormone antagonist

Background  

Growth hormone (GH) plays an incompletely understood role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we use transgenic mice expressing a growth hormone antagonist (GHA) to explore the role of GH in regulating postnatal brain, spinal cord and body growth into adulthood. The GHA transgene encodes a protein that inhibits the binding of GH to its receptor, specifically antagonizing the trophic effects of endogenous GH.     

E.S.R. studies of radiation damage and structure in oxide glasses not containing transition group ions: A contemporary overview with illustrations from the alkali borate system

Electron spin resonance (e.s.r.) is a particularly powerful method for identifying and characterizing radiation-induced defects in vitreous materials. This paper reviews the fundamental principles and the present state of the art in applying e.s.r. techniques to achieve these ends in oxide glasses which do not contain transition group ions. A wide variety of generic defect types are discussed in some detail by means of examples from the alkali borate system. These include oxygen-associated trapped hole centers and oxygen-vacancy-associated trapped electron centers, as well as several electron and hole-type centers which are associated with interstitial cations and anions, respectively. Probable analogs in other oxide glasses are pointed out. Special emphasis is placed on the kinds of structural information which can be obtained from these studies.     

On-chip multi-electrochemical sensor array platform for simultaneous screening of nitric oxide and peroxynitrite

In this work we report on the design, microfabrication and analytical performances of a new electrochemical sensor array (ESA) which allows for the first time the simultaneous amperometric detection of nitric oxide (NO) and peroxynitrite (ONOO(-)), two biologically relevant molecules. The on-chip device includes individually addressable sets of gold ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) of 50 μm diameter, Ag/AgCl reference electrode and gold counter electrode. The electrodes are separated into two groups; each has one reference electrode, one counter electrode and 110 UMEs specifically tailored to detect a specific analyte. The ESA is incorporated on a custom interface with a cell culture well and spring contact pins that can be easily interconnected to an external multichannel potentiostat. Each UME of the network dedicated to the detection of NO is electrochemically modified by electrodepositing thin layers of poly(eugenol) and poly(phenol). The detection of NO is performed amperometrically at 0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH = 7.4) and other buffers adapted to biological cell culture, using a NO-donor. The network of UMEs dedicated to the detection of ONOO(-) is used without further chemical modification of the surface and the uncoated gold electrodes operate at -0.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl to detect the reduction of ONOOH in PBS. The selectivity issue of both sensors against major biologically relevant interfering analytes is examined. Simultaneous detection of NO and ONOO(-) in PBS is also achieved.     

Transfer measurements for the Ti+Ni systems at near barrier energies

Large enhancements have been observed in the sub-barrier fusion cross sections for Ti+Ni systems in our previous studies. Coupled channel calculations incorporating couplings to 2⁺ and 3⁻ states failed to explain these enhancements completely. A possibilty of transfer channels contributing to the residual enhancements had been suggested. In order to investigate the role of relevant transfer channels, measurements of one- and two-nucleon transfer were carried out for ^46,48Ti+⁶¹Ni systems. The present paper gives the results of these studies.     

Using FTIR spectroscopy to detect sericin on historic silk

Iron-catalyzed Doyle-Kirmse reaction of allyl sulfides with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane

[formula: see text] Iron salts efficiently catalyze the Doyle-Kirmse reaction of allyl sulfides with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane and ethyl diazoacetate in dichloroethane at 83 degrees C. Competitive dimerization is less of a problem with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane than with ethyl diazoacetate. Good results are obtained using only 1.5 equiv of (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane, even without slow addition. Phosphine ligands affect the kinetics, but not the diastereoselectivity. Dppe and BINAP lead to higher yields than dppp, but no enantioselection was detected with R-(+)-BINAP.
