The formation of lactams of N-(2-amino)benzoylamino acids

N-(2-Nitro)benzoylamino acids were prepared by 2-nitrobenzoylation of amino acids via the mixed ethylcarbonic anhydride procedure. They were reduced catalytically to N-(2-amino)benzoylamino acids which underwent cyclization to the corresponding lactams under a variety of conditions. The use of this reaction sequence for stepwise degradation of peptides seems possible.     

Anionic graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate on starch and dextrin

The anionic graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate on the potassium alkoxide derivative of starch or dextrin in DMSO was studied. The effects of monomer and alkoxide concentrations as well as temperature were investigated. The yield of graft polymer increased with increasing alkoxide concentration. With increasing monomer concentration and with increasing temperature the extent of homopolymer formation increased. The composition of the graft polymers was found to depend on the reaction conditions. Graft polymers having about 10–40% poly(methyl methacrylate) were obtained. There were quantitative differences in yield of isolated graft polymer between starch and dextrin and these were ascribed to differences in the solubility properties of the carbohydrates. Evidence on the structure of the graft polymers and on the mechanism of the graft polymerization was obtained from acid hydrolysis of the graft polymers and determination of the molecular weights of the cleaved side chains.     

Steric mode of enzymic hydroxylation at primary carbon atoms: Hydroxylation of (1R)- and (1S)-[1-3H, 2H, 1H][1-14C]-octanes by Pseudomonas Oleovorans

(1R)- and (1S) [1-³H, ²H, ¹H]-octanes and mixed with [1-¹⁴C]-octane, were synthesized. The mixed samples were incubated with homogenats of P. oleovorans strain TF4-1L and the biosynthesized mixtures of octanols isolated. It was shown that mainly the achiral termini [-C¹H₃] were hydroxylated and that chiral methyls were oxygenated to the extent of 20–30%. In all instances the products derived from hydroxylation at the chiral methyls [-C-³H, ²H, ¹H] were mixtures of (1R)- and (1S)-octanols, the major component of which was the alcohol obtained by displacement of ¹H. The results indicate that hydroxylation proceeded with a normal isotope effect k_h>k_d>k_t. The amount of (1R)-octanol in the mixtures of octanols derived from (1R)- and (1S)-octane was determined. It was found that the C-1 hydroxylation of octane proceeded with retention, i.e. the incoming hydroxyl assumed the orientation of the displaced hydrogen (or isotopic hydrogen) atom.     

Synthesis and properties of 7-hydroxy-8-phenylxanthine and its derivatives. Disproportionation to derivatives of 8-phenylxanthine and 6-amino-5-nitrosouracil

8-Phenyl, 8-(p-methoxyphenyl) and 8-(p-chlorophenyl)-7-hydroxyxanthine were synthesized by ring closure of 6-amino-5-nitrosouracil with benzaldehyde, p-methoxybenzaldehyde and p-chlorobenzaldehyde, respectively. The disproportionation of these products to the corresponding 8-phenylxanthines and 6-amino-5-nitrosouracil was studied. The dependence of the rate of the reaction on the various substituents was studied. The disproportionation reaction is inhibited by the polarophilic ethyl acetylenedicarboxylate and enhanced by phosphate.

Regularization of mixed second-order elliptic problems

It is shown that weak solutions of mixed elliptic problems are Hölder continuous of any order less than 1/2 and that they possess higher regularity in non-critical directions.     

Enzymatic transesterification of steroid esters in organic solvents

A mild procedure for the conversion of steroid esters into the corresponding alcohols via lipase-catalyzed transesterification reaction in organic solvents is described. Aspects of stereoselectivity and regioselectivity of the reaction are noted.
