The plasticity of the Cu(H2O) 6 2+ Jahn-Teller complex affected by lattice strains and cooperative interactions

The EPR spectra evolution of Cs₂Zn_1?x Cu_x(ZrF₆)₂ · 6H₂O (x=0.01, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) in the temperature range 4.2–330 K and the x-ray structure analysis of the compound with x=1.0 in the range 150–327 K show that the Jahn-Teller (JT) complex Cu(H₂O)₆ coordination sphere undergoes a plastic deformation. The observed effect is due to the combined influence of small lattice strains existing in the paraphase and a new one appearing as a result of a ferroelastic phase transition and increasing with decreasing temperature below T _c . It is proved that both cooperative interactions between JT complexes and ferroelastic strain stabilize a certain JT configuration. The problem of instability of a JT configuration compressed at T ～ 265 K is discussed.

Thermal stability of amino acids

Thermal decomposition of L-α-amino acids RCH₂(NH₂)COOH where R = Me₂CH, Me₂CHCH₂, MeEtCH, and C₆H₅CH₂ was studied at temperatures below the melting points of their crystals. From the effective rate constants of the first order reactions energy parameters in the Arrhenius equation were calculated. Correlations between the reaction rate constants k _R and the inductive constants σ* of substituents R and also between the rate constants of the reactions and the dipole moments of amino acids was established. Value of ρ* parameter +8.8 in the Taft equation indicates the heterolytic mechanism of transformation of the amino acids. Chromato-mass spectrometric analysis of decomposition products shows that condensation, decarboxylation, and deamination of the amino acids take place.     

Surface and electrochemical properties of polypropylene track membrane modified by plasma of non-polymerizing gases

The surface and electrochemical properties of polypropylene track membrane treated by plasma of nitrogen, air, and oxygen are studied. The effect of the plasma-forming gas composition on the surface morphology is considered. The membrane surface microrelief formed during the gas-discharge etching is found to change. Moreover, the non-polymerizing gas plasma treatment induces oxidation of the membrane surface layer and generates oxygen-containing functional groups, mostly carbonyl and carboxyl. The higher membrane roughness and its hydrophilization is shown to lead to its better wettability. In addition, the presence of polar groups in the membrane surface layer modifies its hydrodynamic and electrochemical properties so that water permeability and conductivity of modified membranes increase.     

Jahn-Teller effect in low-spin Ni3+ in the LaAlO3 ceramic

This paper reports on an EPR study of LaAl_1?x Ni_xO₃ solid solutions with x≤0.12 made in the 4.2-to 300-K temperature range. In the X range, the broadening of the single EPR line with g _eff=2.148 was observed at temperatures below ～40 K. In the Q range, a slightly anisotropic EPR line with g _⊥ ^′ =2.145±0.002 and g _‖ ^′ =2.154±0.002 transforms to a rhombic-symmetry spectrum with g ₁=2.183±0.002, g ₂=2.143±0.002, and g ₃=2.118±0.002. It is shown that the observed low-temperature effects are due to the lowered symmetry of the complex under the combined action of the tetragonal Jahn-Teller distortions and of the trigonal component of the crystal field.     

Some capabilities of microwave remote sensing of the atmosphere from drifting vehicles

We study the physical conditions for balloon-borne radiometric sounding of the humidity height profile in the 3-mm atmospheric transparency window, an unusual spectral band for such problems, using a balloon drifting in the tropopause. EPR evidence of antiferromagnetic ordering in single‐layer graphene

We report electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) evidence of the antiferromagnetic ordering in pristine single‐layer graphene. Temperature dependences of the parameters of EPR spectra obtained for vacuum‐processed samples were studied within the temperature range of 4.2–300 K. Our experiment has confirmed recent theoretical predictions that in single‐layer graphene the carrier‐mediated exchange interaction leads to antiferromagnetic coupling. We note some quantitative discrepancies between the theory and experimental findings and discuss their origins. (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
