Towards slow μ− production via muon catalyzed fusion

Slow ^– production via dd-CF using a two-layer arrangement is investigated. To determine its feasibility, experimental measurements are now in progress using the muonic X-ray detection method. The following experimental steps are being considered: (1) measurement of the number of ^– stopped inside a solid H₂/D₂ layer by detecting p K X-rays, (2) hot d emission detection by placing a secondary target at a distance of 10–30 mm from the layer and by detecting specific delayed X-rays, (3) measurement of the disappearance of d emission as the added D₂ layer is increased, (4) dd-CF measurement by detecting fusion protons, and (5) slow ^– emission detection. Results of the initial test experiment are presented.     

A proposal for new surface magnetism studies with a repolarization method

A new spectroscopic method to study surface magnetism is proposed. The method measures the time-evolution of spin polarization due to the magnetic coupling with polarized electron spins of unpolarized and slow radioactive probes. Because of the expectedly high sensitivity and efficiency, a large field of applications will be opened by using slow positive muons,¹²B nuclei, etc.     

Wavelength effect on the photoinduced reaction of polymethylmethacrylate

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) containing benzophenone (BP) was photo-irradiated with monochromatic radiation of wavelength 260–360 nm using the Okazaki Large Spec-trograph (OLS). On irradiation of PMMA films containing BP in air, the sensitized main-chain scission and photocrosslinking of PMMA took place simultaneously. These reactions are dependent on irradiation wavelength. The threshold wavelength for both reactions is found to be ca. 380 nm. The number of main-chain scission and amount of gel increased with the increase of BP concentration in PMMA. Photosensitized main-chain scission favors the irradiation of radiation at ca. 280 nm and photocrosslinking takes place efficiently with the exposure of 340 nm radiation. A possible mechanism for photosensitized reaction is proposed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Elementary processes in the radiation-induced degradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate)—A note

Elementary processes of γ-irradiated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) have been investigated by electron spin resonance (esr) and optical absorption measurements. On irradiating PET films with γ-rays at ?196°C and in the dark, they develop a reddish purple color and show esr spectra which are assigned to ionic species of PET. The optical absorption spectra of γ-irradiated PET films at ?196°C and those of a model compound (diethylterephthalate(DET))-2-methyltetrahydrofuran system also confirm these assignments. A possible mechanism for the elementary processes of γ-ray-induced degradation of PET is proposed.     

Experimental demonstration of the induction synchrotron

We report an experimental demonstration of the induction synchrotron, the concept of which has been proposed as a future accelerator for the second generation of neutrino factory or hadron collider. The induction synchrotron supports a superbunch and a superbunch permits more charge to be accelerated while observing the constraints of the transverse space-charge limit. By using a newly developed induction acceleration system instead of radio-wave acceleration devices, a single proton bunch injected from the 500 MeV booster ring and captured by the barrier bucket created by the induction step voltages was accelerated to 6 GeV in the KEK proton synchrotron.     

D/A Converters and Iterated Function Systems

This paper discusses A/D and D/A converters as applications of iterated function systems. We describe operation of basic converters in terms of iterate function systems and introduce typical examples for binary and Gray encodings/decodings. We then comment that converters in the field of analog signal processing have different character from iterated function systems in the field of nonlinear dynamical systems. Simple implementation circuits for the binary and Gray D/A converters are also shown.     

Temperature dependence of (μ−O) paramagnetic shift in highT c superconductor La2−x Sr x CuO4

In order to investigate the electronic structure around oxygen in superconducting La_2–x Sr _x CuO₄ (x=0.10 and 0.14), precise measurements were carried out on the paramagnetic Knight shifts in the spin rotation frequency of the negative muon bound to the oxygen with reference to antiferromagnetic La_2–x Sr _x CuO₄ (x=0.05). Remarkable temperature as well as crystalline-axis dependence was observed for the highT _c case with a divergence character towardsT _c. Possible mechanisms to explain the observed results are given.     

Quasiadiabatic, nonfocusing transition-energy crossing

A quasiadiabatic nonfocusing transition-energy crossing is proposed for suppressing any nonadiabatic and undesired features in a longitudinally separated function-type accelerator, in which particles are confined by an radio-frequency voltage with an adiabatic reduction of the amplitude and accelerated by a step voltage. This new method has been examined, both theoretically and experimentally.
