Application of directed metallation in synthesis. Part 3: Studies in the synthesis of (±)-semivioxanthin and its analogues

The synthesis of several analogues of (±)-semivioxanthin including five thiophene analogues, using directed metalation are reported. The strategy consisted of the synthesis of functionalized naphthalene or benzo[b]thiophene as building blocks followed by annelation of the pyrone.     

Working group report: Neutrino and astroparticle physics

This is the report of neutrino and astroparticle physics working group at WHEPP-7. Discussions and work on CP violation in long baseline neutrino experiments, ultra high energy neutrinos, supernova neutrinos and water Cerenkov detectors are discussed.     

Rapid dissolution procedure for base-metals-bearing complex materials for quality control assessment

A less labour-intensive method, involving a mixture of 1.0 g MnO₂ + 20 mL HCl (11), is proposed for decomposing seven ores and six metallurgical products for accurate and precise estimation of copper, lead, zinc, cobalt and nickel for quality control assessment. Twentyone international reference materials were also analysed. Results of regression analyses are presented and intermethod comparison studies reveal that the probability of results being different compared with a reference method was less than 1%. Sample decomposition is straightforward and the method has been found to be very simple, rapid and easily adaptable, as it involves no separation of the analyte from the matrix elements.     

A novel method for measurement of concentration using two dimensional photonic crystal structures

A novel method to measure the concentration of sugar, sodium chloride and alcohol, in their aqueous solution by using two dimensional photonic crystal structures is presented. This measurement is very accurate as the principle is based on variation of photonic band gap with respect to concentration. Photonic band gap here is computed using plane wave expansion method.     

Selective Reduction of Dienones Synthesis of Intermediates for Sesqui-and Diterpenes

The tricyclic enones 15–20, intermediates to several sesqui-and diterpenes, have been synthesised in high yields involving selective hydrogenation of the disubstituted double bonds of the dienones 9-14 respectively in the presence of tris (triphenylphosphine)rhodium(I) chloride catalyst.     

Prediction of entrance length and mass suction rate for a cylindrical sucking funnel

Conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy have been solved numerically for a cylindrical funnel with louvers (lateral openings on the side wall of the cylindrical funnel through which air can come into it) to compute the suction rate of air into the funnel. The nozzle placed centrally at the bottom of the cylinder ejects high‐velocity hot gaseous products so that atmospheric air gets sucked into the funnel. The objective of the work is to compute the ratio of the rate of mass suction to that of the mass ejected by the nozzle for different operating conditions and geometrical size of the funnel. From the computation it has been found that there exists optimum funnel diameter and optimum funnel height for which the mass suction is the highest. The protruding length of the nozzle into the funnel has almost no effect on the mass suction rate after a certain funnel height. The louvers opening area has a very high impact on the mass suction rate. The entrance length for such a sucking funnel is strikingly much lower compared with a simple cylindrical pipe having uniform flow at the inlet at same Reynolds number. A new correlation has been developed to propose the entrance length for a sucking pipe, the rate of mass suction into it and the exhaust plume temperature over a wide range of operating parameters that are normally encountered in a general funnel operations of naval or merchant ship. Advances in organic synthesis using polymer-supported reagents and scavengers under microwave irradiation

Summary Microwave-assisted and polymer-supported organic syntheses have emerged independently as versatile tools for rapid generation of organic molecules. Chemists are increasingly looking for a combination of both techniques for efficient organic synthesis. This review covers the recent literature on organic synthesis using microwave heating in conjunction with polymer-supported reagents and scavengers.     

Solubility of carbon dioxide in aqueous solution of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol and piperazine

In this work, new experimental results of the vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) of CO₂ in aqueous 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) and piperazine (PZ) have been presented in the temperature range of 298-328 K and PZ concentration range of 2-8 mass%, keeping the total amine concentration in the solution at 30 mass%. The partial pressures of CO₂ were in the range of 0.1-1450 kPa. A thermodynamic model was developed to correlate and predict the VLE of CO₂ in aqueous AMP + PZ. The electrolyte nonrandom two liquid (ENRTL) theory has been used to develop the VLE model for the quaternary system (CO₂ + AMP + PZ + H₂O) to describe the equilibrium behaviour of the solution. The experimental data from this work and data available in the literature were used to regress the ENRTL interaction parameters. The model predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data of CO₂ solubility in aqueous blends of this work as well as those reported in the literature. The current model can also predict speciation, heat of absorption, pH of the CO₂ loaded solution, and amine volatility.
