Interaction of soliton-like light beamsin second-order non-linear materials

We investigate numerically the interaction between two light beams, initially monochromatic, during the excitation of solitary waves in quadratically non-linear media. We show that the result of the interaction is strongly dependent on soliton oscillations occurring during excitation, generating a new class of threshold phenomena.     

Analysis of the anisotropy of group velocity error due to spatial finite difference schemes from the solution of the 2D linear Euler equations

Numerical differencing schemes are subject to dispersive and dissipative errors, which in one dimension, are functions of a wavenumber. When these schemes are applied in two or three dimensions, the errors become functions of both wavenumber and the direction of the wave. For the Euler equations, the direction of flow and flow velocity are also important. Spectral analysis was used to predict the error in magnitude and direction of the group velocity of vorticity–entropy and acoustic waves in the solution of the linearised Euler equations in a two‐dimensional Cartesian space. The anisotropy in these errors, for three schemes, were studied as a function of the wavenumber, wave direction, mean flow direction and mean flow Mach number. Effects of anisotropic diffraction on quadratic multisoliton excitation in noncritically p hase-matched crystals

The generation of multiple quadratic spatial solitons aligned approximately along a crystal axis in a biaxial noncritically phase-matched crystal is shown theoretically and experimentally to be the consequence of anisotropic diffraction.     

Theory of non phase-matched second harmonic generation of surface plasmons

Non phase-matched harmonic generation of surface plasmons has been analysed using total field solutions which satisfy the nonlinear current driven Maxwell's Equations and electromagnetic boundary conditions. The results are compared with a recent calculation by Mills.     

Incoherent blocker soliton interactions in Kerr waveguide arrays

We have observed the incoherent interaction between a highly confined (blocker) soliton and wide, moving signal beams of a different wavelength in a one-dimensional discrete Kerr medium. Digital switching of the blocker solitons to successive adjacent channels was measured with increasing signal power via both one and two cascaded interactions in an AlGaAs waveguide array, operations equivalent to a reconfigurable three-output router.     

Coherent interactions of dissipative spatial solitons

We report observation of the interaction between two coherent dissipative spatial solitons in a periodically patterned semiconductor optical amplifier with power levels of tens of milliwatts. The interactions are nonlocal and phase dependent and exhibit surprising features, such as soliton birth. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations.
