VUV generation by eighth-order nonlinearity in Hg vapour

Direct eighth-harmonic generation ( = 134.4 nm) of Nd-laser radiation has been studied experimentally in Hg vapour. An electric field produced by free electrons created by photoionization is shown to be reasonable for even-order harmonic generation in a centrosymmetric medium.     

Oxidative Coupling in a Series of Derivatives of 4a,9-Diaza-1,2,4a,9a-tetrahydrofluorene. 6. Reactions with Substituted 2-Aminoethanols

Oxidative coupling of derivatives of 4a,9-diaza-1,2,4a,9a-tetrahydro-9H-fluorene with 2-ethyl-, 2,2-dimethyl-, and 2-hydroxymethyl-2-methylaminoethanol in the presence of MnO₂ led to the selective formation of the corresponding mono- and di(hydroxymethyl)quinonediimines, subsequent cyclization of which gave the products of 6,7-annelation. Coupling with 2,2-di(hydroxymethyl)aminoethanol gave the annelation products directly.     

Oxidative coupling of malononitrile with formation of 1,1,2,3,3-pentacyanopropene salts

A simple and convenient route for the synthesis of 1,1,2,3,3-pentacyanopropene salts is reported. These salts are formed by interaction of malononitrile with SeO₂ in presence of organic N-containing bases or pyridinium salts.     

Oxidative Coupling of 4α,9-Diaza-1,2,4α,9α-tetrahydrofluorenes. 5. Reaction with o-Aminophenol and o-Aminothiophenol

Oxidative coupling of 4,9-diaza-1,2,4,9-tetrahydro-9H-fluorenes with o-aminophenol and o-aminothiophenol in the presence of MnO₂ gives o-hydroxyphenyl- and o-mercaptophenylquinonediimines, cyclization of which gives derivatives of phenoxazine and phenothiazine.     

Spatial Configuration of Derivatives of 5,5a,6,7-Tetrahydropyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazole and 6,7-Dihydro-5aH-pyrido[1,2-b]benzoxazole

The spatial configurations of 7,9-diphenyl-5a,6-tetramethylene-5,5a,6,7-tetrahydropyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazole and 7,9-diphenyl-5a,6-tetramethylene-2,5a,6,7-tetrahydropyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazol-2-one have been established by X-ray crystallography. Analogous configurations are proposed for a series of other derivatives of 5,5a,6,7-tetrahydropyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazoles and some derivatives of 6,7-dihydro-5aH-pyrido[1,2-b]benzoxazoles on the basis of ¹H NMR spectroscopic data and the results of quantum chemical calculations using the MNDO, AM1, and PM3 methods.     

Specific features of absorption spectra of fractal-structured silver sols

Effects exerted on plasmon absorption spectra by different characteristics of aggregating silver sols with a fractal distribution of particles whose sizes are in the range 5–30 nm are studied by mathematical simulation with the aid of a modification of the method of coupled dipoles. Distinctive features of plasmon absorption contours of silver sols having different particle-size distribution functions and different properties of the adsorption layers of the particles are explained.
