Hydrogen generation in nitric acid solutions of plutonium

Summary Literature data on the radiolytic generation of hydrogen in nitric acid solutions of plutonium are used to construct a model that predicts G(H₂) as a function of the nitric acid and plutonium concentrations. The model indicates that G(H₂) decreases with increasing concentration of nitric acid, in agreement with most experimental observations. The effect of the plutonium concentration on G(H₂) is secondary to the effect of the acid concentration. An equation for interpolating Gvalues for total gas is included.     

Environmental plutonium: Reference states and alpha coefficients

The results of plutonium oxidation state distribution calculations do not depend on special attention to any oxidation state as has been incorrectly supposed in some literature sources. Experimentally determined alpha coefficients for natural water could make the distribution of environmental plutonium easy to estimate with a programmable pocket calculator.Mound is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy by EG&G Mound Applied Technologies, Inc., under Contract No. DE-AC04-88DP43495.     

A modified Silver–Meal heuristic for dynamic lot sizing under incremental quantity discounts

This note presents a variation of the well-known Silver–Meal heuristic to deal with lot sizing under a combination of a known, but time-varying, demand pattern along with an incremental quantity discount structure. The heuristic is shown to perform very well on a set of experiments presented in a recent paper in this journal. Additional experiments are performed to further explore the time horizon effects on the relative performance of the newly proposed heuristic compared to the two best performing ones from the previous paper.     

Direct measurement of the radiative lifetime of the A2Σ+(υ′ = 0, K′ = 1, J′ = 32) state of OH and OD

The radiative lifetime of the A²Σ⁺(υ′ = 0, K′ = 1, J′ = 3/2) state of OH and OD has been directly measured by following the decay of fluorescence excited by light from a frequency doubled dye laser. Stern-Volmer extrapolation of the results to zero pressure gave τ(OH) = 788 ± 13 ns and τ(OD) = 754 ± 12 ns.     

Polyoma T (tumor) antigen species in abortively and stably transformed cells.

Stable neoplastic transformation of cells by polyoma virus requires the particpation of two viral genes, designated ts-a and hr-t. The effects of mutations in these two genes on the patterns of T-antigen synthesis during productive infection have been previously described: ts-a mutants are affected in the "large" (100K) nuclear T antigen, and hr-t mutants are affected in the "middle" (36K, 56K, 63K) and "small" (22K) T antigens. The latter are associated predominantly with the plasma membrane (56K) and cytosol fractions, respectively. Here we examine the expression of the various forms of polyoma T antigen in nonproductive infection (abortive transformation) as well as in stably transformed cell lines of different species. The results on abortive transformation are essentially the same as those described above for productive infection. In stably transformed cells, the middle and small T antigens are seen to various extents. The large T antigen, however, is often absent or present below the level of detection. Clones lacking the large T antigen are found most often among mouse transformants, but are also seen among rat transformants. Retention of the 100K species in transformed cells therefore appears to be, at least in part, an inverse function of the level of permissivity of the host toward productive viral infection. These findings indicate that the induction of the transformed phenotype in both abortively and stably transformed cells generally does not require the large T antigen, but rather the products of the hr-t gene.     

Quantum field theoretical methods in chemically bonded systems II

Summary Many-body perturbation theory is derived for chemical bonds. Paired quasiparticles represent the bonds. Products of the paired quasiparticles define a model Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer function. The pairing force is added as a model interaction to the self-consistent problem. The starting model is based on valency and adiabatic symmetry correlation. Symmetries are enforced by the model Hamiltonian. Perturbative corrections are expressed as ordinary Feynman diagrams. Growth of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) films prepared by base‐inhibited vapor phase polymerization

Transparent [90% transmittance at 550 nm at a sheet resistance (R_s) of 279 Ω sq^?1] poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films with electrical conductivities up to 1354 S cm^?1 are prepared using base‐inhibited vapor phase polymerization at atmospheric pressure. The influence of reaction conditions, such as temperature and growth time, on the film formation is investigated. A simple and convenient two‐electrode method is used for the in situ measurement of resistance, enabling to investigate the growth mechanism of polymer films and the influence of different parameters (relative humidity and the amount of oxidant) on the film growth. Low humidity exerts a detrimental effect on film growth and conductivity. In situ R_s measurements suggest that a large structural change occurs upon washing the PEDOT‐oxidant film. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym. Phys. 2014 , 52, 561–571
