The cyclodimerisation of 3-methyl-2-butenenitrile

3-Methyl-2-butenenitrile (1) cyclodimerised on treatment with lithium diisopropylamide in dimethoxyethane at temperatures between ?78°C and 0°C to 3-amino-4-cyano-1,5,5-trimethyl-1,3-cyclohexadiene (2) the structure of which was established by acid hydrolysis to the known 4-cyano-1,5,5-trimethyl-1-cyclohexene-3-one (3).     

The role of Biot slow waves in electroseismic wave phenomena

The electromagnetic fields that are generated as a spherical seismic wave (either P or S) traverses an interface separating two porous materials are numerically modeled both with and without the generation of Biot slow waves at the interface. In the case of an incident fast-P wave, the predicted electric-field amplitudes when slow waves are neglected can easily be off by as much as an order of magnitude. In the case of an incident S wave, the error is much smaller (typically on the order of 10% or less) because not much S-wave energy gets converted into slow waves. In neglecting the slow waves, only six plane waves (reflected and transmitted fast-P, S, and EM waves) are available with which to match the eight continuity conditions that hold at each interface. This overdetermined problem is solved by placing weights on the eight continuity conditions so that those conditions that are most important for obtaining the proper response are emphasized. It is demonstrated that when slow waves are neglected, it is best to also neglect the continuity of the Darcy flow and fluid pressure across an interface. The principal conclusion of this work is that to properly model the electromagnetic (EM) fields generated at an interface by an incident seismic wave, the full Biot theory that allows for generation of slow waves must be employed.     

Conical parametric scattering of a single extraordinary beam in BaTiO3 crystal

In this paper, the parametric scattering of a single extraordinary polarized beam of laser in BaTiO₃ photorefractive crystal has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The resulting pattern consists of beam fanning, isotropic ring, and anisotropic one. Among all parts of scattering pattern, isotropic ring has not been studied as much as beam fanning and anisotropic ring, and there still are some differences in reports about it. Therefore, the study has mainly focused on this part. In this experimental configuration, isotropic ring is just visible in positive angles although the other parts of parametric scattering pattern can be visible from behind and in front of the crystal. In addition to steady state pattern in forward and backward directions, its transient behavior with the rotation of crystal has been studied. The results of experiments have been analyzed carefully, and their theoretical explanations have been presented based on the standard theory of parametric scattering in photorefractive crystals. It has been shown that this configuration corresponds to the so called parametric B-process scattering.     

Conjugacy and Other Properties of One-Relator Groups

In this note, we prove that certain one-relator groups are residually finite and have solvable (power) conjugacy problem, by an examination of the co-primeness of the exponent sum of some of the generators appearing in the relator.     

A theorem,like f⊘lner’s theorem on amenability,concerning residual properties of free groups

Let PL(F _q) denote the projective line over a Galois field F _q. Consider PSL (2, Z ) as a free product of two cyclic groups <x> and <y> of orders 2 and 3. We have shown that any homomorphism from PSL(2,Z) into PGL(2,q) can be extended to a homomorphism from PGL(2Z) into PGL(2q) except in the case where the order of the image of xyis 6 but the images of xand ydo not commute in PGL(2q). It has been shown also that every element in PGL(2,q), not of order 1,2 , or 6, is the image of xyunder some non-degenerate homomorphism. We have parametrized the conjugacy classes of non-degenerate homomorphisms α with the non-trivial elements of F _q. Due to this parametrization we have developed a useful mechanism by which one can construct.

In this paper we give a graphical method which can be used to determine whether or not a group presentation satisfies the small cancellation conditionT(q). We use this method to determine all 2- and 3-generator presentations satisfyingT(4).
