Baum-Katz-Nagaev type results for martingales

We obtain a Baum-Katz-Nagaev type theorem for bounded martingale difference sequences that have more than a second moment, and prove that the celebrated Hsu-Robbins-Erd?s theorem fails for martingales.

Analytical contributions to the evaluation of painting authenticity from Princely church of Curtea de Arges

The present study contains the analyses performed for pigment samples taken from the Princely church of Curtea de Arges, one of the oldest churches in Romania. The results of our investigations have shown the source of these samples, thus being identified the pigments: natural ultramarine, cinnabar, red earth, and calcium carbonate in the painting from the 14th century, the pigments: lead white, zinc white, and Prussian blue in the repainting from the 19th century and the pigments zinc white, titanium dioxide white, bone white, yellow ochre, red ochre, green earth, artificial ultramarine, and mars red in the interventions carried out in the 20th century. The analyses consisted of light microscopy (LM) and microchemical tests, as well as energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. This system of analyses allows one to precisely determine the authenticity of certain pigments, thus avoiding the dating errors for different interventions carried out on the original mural painting from the Saint Nicholas Princely church of Curtea de Arges.     

Scalar conservation laws with fractional stochastic forcing: Existence,uniqueness and invariant measure

We study a fractional stochastic perturbation of a first-order hyperbolic equation of nonlinear type. The existence and uniqueness of the solution are investigated via a Lax–Ole?nik formula. To construct the invariant measure we use two main ingredients. The first one is the notion of a generalized characteristic in the sense of Dafermos. The second one is the fact that the oscillations of the fractional Brownian motion are arbitrarily small for an infinite number of intervals of arbitrary length.     

On the Effects of UV Radiation on the Release Ability of Glucose Embedded in Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Films

New drug delivery systems based on hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and different percents of glucose were prepared and characterized to check their suitability as UV resistant patches. The spectral absorption properties of the HPC and HPC-glucose blends before and after UV irradiation were analyzed. The surface polarity and hydrophilicity were correlated with the morphology of the films and analyzed with respect to the UV exposure time and the embedded amount of glucose. The effects of UV radiation on in vitro evaluation of glucose release from the HPC films are reported. The mechanism involved in the drug release process, evaluated using the Korsmeyer-Peppas equation, was dependent on the introduced amount of glucose and less on the UV exposure time. A more polar, smoother, and less dense surface releases the glucose over larger periods of time, making the system with lower percents of glucose more adequate for the pursued purpose.
