Energetics of protein-cyclodextrin interactions

The energetics of interaction of a range of cyclodextrins with folded and unfolded proteins has been examined by sensitive microcalorimetry techniques. Weak interaction with exposed amino acid residues promotes unfolding and dissociation of proteins. The possibility that such interactions may facilitate the use of cyclodextrins as chaperone-mimics in the refolding of denatured protein has been explored with the enzyme phosphoglycerate kinase. Up to 40% regain of activity can be achieved in some cases.     

Anion control of isomerism, crystal packing and binding properties in a mononuclear zinc complex

The coordination chemistry of the tetradentate pyridyl N-donor ligand cis-3,5-bis-[2-pyridinyleneamin]-trans-hydroxycyclohexane (DDOP) has been investigated with zinc(II) nitrate and triflate. The resulting complexes, [Zn(DDOP)(H₂O)(NO₃)](NO₃) (1), and [Zn(DDOP)(H₂O)(OTf)](OTf) (2) differ not only in their counterions, but also the arrangement of the axial ligands and their solid state hydrogen bonded networks. Isothermal titration calorimetry was used to assess the difference in binding properties exhibited by the two zinc complexes at physiological pH in an aqueous environment. A series of coordinating amino acids were found to preferentially bind to the mononuclear zinc triflate (1) complex over the corresponding nitrate (2) assembly, with histidine exhibiting a two centre binding mode.     

μSR studies of the vortex lattice in high‐Tc and other superconductors

We review some of the assumptions made in the use of muon spin rotation in superconductors: i.e. that the muons are implanted at random positions in the flux lattice, remain static after implantation and do not appreciably affect the properties of the surrounding superconductor; also that the flux lines are straight and static, and that the observed muon rotation frequency spectrum reflects the microscopic distribution of field values. We shall show how evidence for and against the truth of these assumptions in particular cases may be obtained from the μSR results themselves or by comparison with other measurements, and how this in turn may lead to deeper understanding of flux line structure and motion in superconductors. Tuneable pseudorotaxane formation between a biotin-avidin bioconjugate and CBPQT4+

A biotinylated 1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene derivative has been shown to have the ability to bind strongly to avidin and thus act as an artificial binding site for cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) thereby facilitating the formation of a tuneable pseudorotaxane-based bioconjugate.     

Conservative methods for the Toda lattice equations

We are concerned with the numerical integration of the Todalattice equations by using different conservative methods. Numericalexperiments suggest that the global error for isospectral schemesdecreases exponentially with time but it is almost constantfor either symplectic or more general integrators. We providea theoretical explanation for these experimental findings.
