Sorption of cesium from aqueous waste solution on a SuperLigÒ644 resin

Summary The removal of cesium from aqueous waste solution was investigated in a column setup using a relatively coarse SuperLig^ò644 resin. The bed volume (BV=140) at the onset of breakthrough surpassed the design requirement of 100 BV at 50% breakthrough, and also corresponds to 99.96% cesium removal. Cesium elution with 0.5M HNO₃was satisfactory with a peak BV of 2.5. The elution BV for C/C₀=0.01 was 10, which is less than the target of 15 BV. The percent of sorbed cesium eluted was 99.88%. Further, the BV of the various solutions used for the supporting process steps was sufficient.     

Crystallization of Arthrobacter sp. strain 1C N-(1-D-carboxyethyl)-L-norvaline dehydrogenase and its complex with NAD+

The novel NAD+-linked opine dehydrogenase from a soil isolate Arthrobacter sp. strain 1C belongs to an enzyme superfamily whose members exhibit quite diverse substrate specificites. Crystals of this opine dehydrogenase, obtained in the presence or absence of co-factor and substrates, have been shown to diffract to beyond 1.8 ? resolution. X-ray precession photographs have established that the crystals belong to space group P21212, with cell parameters a = 104.9, b = 80.0, c = 45.5 ? and a single subunit in the asymmetric unit. The elucidation of the three-dimensional structure of this enzyme will provide a structural framework for this novel class of dehydrogenases to enable a comparison to be made with other enzyme families and also as the basis for mutagenesis experiments directed towards the production of natural and synthetic opine-type compounds containing two chiral centres.     

Transient response of a Brownian particle with general damping

We study the transient response of a Brownian particle with general damping in a system of metastable potential well. The escape rate is evaluated as a function of time after an infinite wall is removed from the potential barrier. It takes a relaxation time for the rate to reach its limit value and this rate relaxation time differs from the relaxation time of the majority of the probability around the bottom of the potential well. The rate relaxation time is found to depend on the temperature as well as the damping constant. It involves the diffusion time and the instanton time, in general agreement with recent studies of the overdamped case by Bier et al. [Phys. Rev. E 59, 6422 (1999)].     

Anionic-initiated polymerization of β-nitrostyrenes

β-Nitrostyrene and many of its derivatives have been shown to yield high polymers via anionic initiation with alkoxide ions in protic solvents, e.g., alcohols. A study was conducted to determine the effect of certain substituents on the polymerization characteristics of representative monomers of this series and the properties of their polymers. A kinetic study was conducted and the relative rates of propagation were unexpectedly found to correlate well with brown's σ⁺ values. The rates of initiation of two representative monomers, β-nitrostyrene and p-methoxy-β-nitrostyrene, with sodium ethoxide were found to be 3.51 and 2.86 liter/mole sec, respectively. The rate of chain transfer in ethanol was studied qualitatively by using gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) to obtain molecular weight distribution (MWD) curves. The low values of the M _w/M _n ratios indicated little chain transfer in the protic solvent.
