FT-IR study on solvent effects in building blocks of bioactive compounds. V

3-Hydroxy-4-hydroxymethyl pyrrolidin-2-ones, easily prepared from the Baylis–Hillman adduct 1-ethyl-4-methyl-2-hydroxy-3-methylenebutanedioate, are useful intermediates in the synthesis of bioactive compounds. In order to understand the mechanism involved in this reaction, vibrational and Montecarlo molecular mechanics conformational analysis on 1-ethyl-4-methyl-2-hydroxy-3-methylenebutanedioate were carried out, confirming the existence of a low energy intramolecular H-bonded five-member ring.     

Investigations of chromium(III), manganese(III), tin(II) and lead(II) dithiocarbamate complexes

Piperidine-, morpholine-4-, N-methylpiperazine-4- and thiornorpholine-4-carbodithioate complexes of chromium(III), manganese(III), tin(II) and lead(II) are prepared and characterized by chemical analyses, spectroscopic methods (I.R. and electronic spectra), magnetic susceptibilities, conductivity measurements and mass spectra. The complexes are of the type M(R₂dtc)n, where n is the oxidation number of the metal ion. Where possible a tentative stereochemistry of the complexes is discussed on the basis of the results obtained. In all the complexes the dithiocarbamate ligands show bidentate behaviour.     

Densities and excess molar volumes for binary mixtures of N,N-dimethylformamide+ 1,2-dimethoxyethane

Densities are reported for N,N-dimethylformamide and 1,2-dimethoxyethane binary mixtures at different mole fractions covering the whole miscibility range and at 19 temperatures ranging from –10 to 80°C. The experimental density data have been fitted by empirical relations and the excess volumes by a Redlich-Kister equation. The 11 N,N-dimethylformamide and 1,2-dimethoxyethane adduct appears to be stable throughout the temperature range. A comparison with other DMF containing mixtures is made.     

Spektrographische Bestimmung von Eisen,Nickel und Chrom in Platin-Netzen

Zusammenfassung Eine Methode zur spektrographischen Bestimmung von Eisen, Nickel und Chrom in Platin-Rhodium-Netzen, die als Katalysatoren bei der Cyanwasserstoffsynthese gebraucht werden, wurde beschrieben. Sie beruht auf der Verdünnung der in Königswasser gelösten Probe mit Aluminiumnitratlösung, die dann getrocknet und in Oxid verwandelt wird. Als Bezugselement dient Aluminium.

Summary A method is described for the spectrographic determination of iron, nickel and chromium in platinum-rhodium nettings that are employed as catalysts in the hydrocyanic synthesis. The method is based on the dilution, with aluminium nitrate solution, of the samples dissolved in aqua regia; the diluted solution is then taken to dryness and converted to oxide. Aluminium serves as reference element.

Résumé On a décrit une méthode de dosage spectrographique du fer, du nickel et du chrome dans les grilles platine-rhodium utilisées comme catalyseurs dans la synthèse de l'acide cyanhydrique. Elle repose sur la dilution par une solution de nitrate d'aluminium des échantillons dissous dans l'eau régale. Ils sont ensuite séchés et utilisés sous forme d'oxydes. On prend l'aluminium comme élément de référence.

Five-coordinate low-spin cobalt(II) complexes with benzeneseleninato ions and ethylenediamine as ligands

Summary Five-coordinate bis(benzeneseleninato)tris(ethylenediamine) cobalt (II)complexes are obtained by reaction of Co(H₂O)₂ (XC₆ H4 SeO₂)2 complexes (X = H, p-Cl, m-CI, p-Br, ni-Br, p-Me,p-NO₂) with ethylenediamine. The diaquo complexes (one mole)react with ethylenediamine (three moles)to form O-seleninato derivatives. Spectral and magnetic properties show that the complexes are low-spin (s = 1/2) and,on the basis of the electronic spectra a distorted trigonal geometry,D _3h , is suggested. Assignments for the electronic spectra are proposed. Conductivity data indicate that these derivatives are nonelectrolytes. Both ethylenediamine and [RSeO₂ ]^– behave as monodentate ligands.     

The relative permittivity of 1,2-dimethoxyethane and N,N-dimethylformamide mixtures from −10 to 40°C

Binary solutions of N,N-dimethylformamide and 1,2-dimethoxyethane have been investigated by means of dielectric measurements at temperatures ranging from –10 to +40°C, and for nine mixtures covering the whole miscibility field expressed by the mole fraction of one component (0X₁1). The experimental data were used to study the dependence of on T and X₁, of the type = (T), = (X₁), and = (T,X₁). Further, the excess mixing function _E has been evaluated in order to identify particular patterns of interaction between unlike molecules and any other factor that could modify such patterns. The minimum in the _E vs. composition plots suggests the formation of an adduct of stoichiometric ratio DMFDME=11 at all the investigated temperatures.     

A new high-performance liquid chromatographic/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometric method for the simultaneous determination of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil as markers of surface contamination for occupational exposure monitoring

A new high-performance liquid chromatographic/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometric (HPLC/ESI-MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of 5-fluorouracil (5FU), methotrexate (MTX) and cyclophosphamide (CP) in environmental samples. These compounds, commonly used in the treatment of cancer, are recognized as genotoxic. In order to estimate the occupational exposure of hospital personnel handling these drugs, wipe samples were taken from the working surfaces and directly analyzed (with trophosphamide as internal standard) using a reversed-phase capillary column and MS/MS detection. This is the first HPLC/MS/MS method for the simultaneous determination of 5FU, MTX and CP. The present method offers high sensitivity, with detection limits of 1.1 microg l(-1) for MTX and CP and 33.3 microg l(-1) for 5FU, avoiding any sample preconcentration procedure. Rapidity, specificity, high accuracy (mean values between 92.4 and 99.9%) and precision (mean RSD values between 3.4 and 12.1%) make the method suitable for the routine determination of these three antineoplastic drugs.     

The relative permittivity of 1,2-ethanediol+2-methoxyethanol+water ternary mixtures

The relative permittivities for the ternary 1,2-ethanediol (component 1) + 2-methoxyethanol (2) + water (3) solvent system have been measured for 66 mixtures covering the whole mole fraction composition 0X₁/X₂/X₃ 1 range at –10, –5 and 0 °C. The experimental data were used to test some empirical relations stating the dependence of = (X₁, X₂, X₃). A comparison between the calculated and experimental data show that these equations can be usefully employed to predict values in correspondence of the experimental data gaps.     

Spectroscopic Investigation on the Acrolein Hydration

The progress with time of the UV and ¹H NMR spectra of an aqueous solution of acrolein shows that, contrary to assumptions of previous authors, hydracrylaldehyde is not the only reaction product: in addition to it and its hydrated form, spontaneous oxidation products are present.
