Ageing of wet-synthesized oxide powders

Wet chemical synthesis of precursor oxide ceramics is a method to obtain small particulate powders. Such powders are far more prone to ageing in air than more traditional precursors. Thermogravimetric analysis is used to highlight the species responsible for the ageing of ceramic precursors. Indeed water and carbon dioxide are observed to evolve from aged powders. Ceramics obtained from aged precursors can reach a very low final density with respect to the theoretical value. A large degree of the original sintering properties can be recovered after washing the aged powders with ethanol in a basic medium.     

Ca7Au3 and Ca5Au4, two structures closely related to the Th7Fe3 and Pu5Rh4 types

Two new intermetallic compounds have been synthetized and structurally studied by single crystal diffractometric data: Ca₇Au₃ (oP80, space groupPbca,a = 20.742(8), b = 18.036(8), c = 6.665(2) A?,Z = 8, R = 0.051) and Ca₅Au₄ (mP18, space groupP2₁/c, a = 8.028(3), b = 8.019(6), c = 7.727(3) A?, β = 109.16(6)°,Z = 2, R = 0.104). Both atomic arrangements, which represent new structural types, are based on Au-centered Ca trigonal prisms and are geometrically related to the Th₇Fe₃ and Pu₅Rh₄ structures.     

Limit on right handed weak coupling parameters from inelastic neutrino interactions

Right handed weak quark currents coupled to the usual left handed weak lepton current would be seen in inclusive antineutrino scattering on nuclei as a contribution at largey with the quark (not antiquark) structure function. We do not see such a term, and can therefore put an upper limit on the relative strengths of such right handed currents: \(\varrho ^2 = \frac{{\sigma _R }}{{\sigma _L }}< 0.009\) , 90% confidence. This measurement puts limits on the mixing angle of left-right symmetric models. In distinction to similar limits derived from muon decay or β decay, our limits are also valid if the right handed neutrino is heavy.     

Measurements of the spin rotation parameterR in high energy elastic scattering and helicity amplitudes at Serpukhov energies

The spin rotation parameterR in pp and ⁺ p elastic scattering at 45 GeV/c has been measured at the Serpukhov accelerator, for ¦t¦ ranging from 0·2 to 0·5 (GeV/c)². The results are presented, together with previousR measurements at lower energies, and are compared with the predictions of Regge pole models. The equality of the values forR in proton-proton and pion-proton scattering, within the experimental errors, is a test of factorization of the residues.Ans-channel helicity amplitude analysis for pion-nucleon scattering at 40 GeV/c is made using all available data, Significant results are obtained for the isoscalar exchange amplitudes. The helicity flip in isoscalar exchange is non negligible. The energy dependence of this amplitude, at 6, 16 and 40 GeV/c, is compared with predictions of Reggs pole models.Presented by L.van Rossum at the Symposium on Hadron-Hadron Scattering at High Energies, Liblice, Czechoslovakia, June 16–21, 1975.     

Selenides and diselenides containing oxadiazoles: a new class of functionalised materials

A simple and efficient procedure for the synthesis of a new class of organoselenium liquid crystal compounds was developed. The coupling of aryl bromides with elemental selenium was catalysed using copper oxide nanopowder in the presence of potassium hydroxide employing dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent. This is the first report of the synthesis and characterisation of liquid crystal-based diselenides. Their mesophases were characterised by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Compounds 1, 2 and 4b exhibited the smectic A phase. In addition, these compounds showed weak blue fluorescence in solution (λ_{max. em.} 350–405 nm) and a Stokes shift of around 90 nm.     

Expeditious preparation of isoxazoles from Δ-isoxazolines as advanced intermediates for functional materials

A collection of isoxazoles derivatives has been efficiently synthesized in three steps. The oximation reaction of aldehydes followed by nitrile oxide [3+2] 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and MnO₂-oxidation reaction furnished the title compounds which were purified by simple filtration on celite®.     

Close-loop three-laser scheme for chaos-encrypted message transmission

In this paper, we numerically evaluate private data transmission using a three-laser scheme, consisting of a pair of twin semiconductor lasers, driven to chaos by delayed optical feedback in a short cavity, and optically injected by a third chaotic laser which forces them to synchronize. This laser is selected with different internal parameters with respect to the twin pair, so that the emissions of the synchronized, matched lasers, are highly correlated, whereas their correlation with the driver is low. The digital message modulates the emission of the transmitter, as in a standard Chaos Modulation scheme. Message recovery is then obtained by subtracting, from the transmitted chaos-masked message, the chaos, locally generated by the synchronized receiver laser. Simulations have been performed with the Lang-Kobayashi model, and, in view of application to private transmission, we have investigated the effect of the parameter mismatch, between transmitter and receiver, on message recovery. A preliminary experimental evaluation has been also performed using specially designed InP integrated modules.
