We consider a SA-SA' critical point in the presence of a symmetry-breaking external magnetic (electric) field with a positive magnetic (dielectric) anisotropy or a dislocation layer. Via a renormalization group analysis of the model hamiltonian, we show that the upper critical dimensions below which mean-field theory breaks down is dc = 2·5. Thus the SA-SA' transition in three dimensions becomes mean-field like in the presence of a symmetry-breaking field. We estimate the reduced temperature region where we can expect to see the mean field SA-SA' critical point in the presence of a magnetic field or a dislocation layer. 相似文献

We demonstrate how tracer microrheology methods can be extended to study submicron scale variations in the viscoelastic response of soft materials; in particular, a semidilute solution of lambda-DNA. The polymer concentration is depleted near the surfaces of the tracer particles, within a distance comparable to the polymer correlation length. The rheology of this microscopic layer alters the tracers' motion and can be precisely quantified using one- and two-point microrheology. Interestingly, we found this mechanically distinct layer to be twice as thick as the layer of depleted concentration, likely due to solvent drainage through the locally perturbed polymer structure. 相似文献

We study the dynamics of rigid spheres embedded in viscoelastic media and address two questions of importance to microrheology. First, we calculate the complete response to an external force of a single bead in a homogeneous elastic network viscously coupled to an incompressible fluid. From this response function we find the frequency range where the standard assumptions of microrheology are valid. Second, we study fluctuations when embedded spheres perturb the media around them and show that mutual fluctuations of two separated spheres provide a more accurate determination of the complex shear modulus than do the fluctuations of a single sphere. 相似文献

We present an elastic model of B-form DNA as a stack of thin, rigid plates or base pairs that are not permitted to deform.
The symmetry of DNA and the constraint of plate rigidity limit the number of bulk elastic constants contributing to a macroscopic
elasticity theory of DNA to four. We derive an effective twist-stretch energy in terms of the macroscopic stretch along and relative excess twist about the DNA molecular axis. In addition to the bulk stretch and twist moduli found previously, we obtain a twist-stretch
modulus with the following remarkable properties: 1) it vanishes when the radius of the helical curve following the geometric
center of each plate is zero, 2) it vanishes with the elastic constant K23 that couples compression normal to the plates to a shear strain, if the plates are perpendicular to the molecular axis, and
3) it is nonzero if the plates are tilted relative to the molecular axis. This implies that a laminated helical structure
carved out of an isotropic elastic medium will not twist in response to a stretching force, but an isotropic material will twist
if it is bent into the shape of a helix.

The magnetic dynamic response function is studied in detail for systems in which the magnetization is conserved and is carried by the spin of one type of particle. Hydrodynamic equations for the magnetization in magnetic systems in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic regimes in the absence of an external field are derived and are shown to be inapplicable when there is an external field present. The hydrodynamic forms of the response function are used to motivate general analytic expressions for the full dynamic response function. Some consideration is given to feasibility of observing the hydrodynamic regime in real systems. 相似文献
