Commutators and scattering theory

We use commutators to find classes of operators which are smooth with respect to the HamiltonianH for a system of quantum mechanical particles which repel each other. It follows thatH is absolutely continuous, the wave operators are complete in many cases when they exist and limits of momentum observables as time approaches ± exist even in cases where the long range of the interaction precludes existence of the wave operators.     

Lower bounds for resonance widths in potential and obstacle scattering

Explicit lower bounds are given for the size of the imaginary parts of resonances for Schrödinger operators with non-trapping or trapping potentials, and for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the exterior of a star-shaped obstacle, both acting in three dimensions.Work partially supported by DiUC/FONDECYT (Chile)Work partially supported by U.S. National Science Foundation grant DMS 8705610     

Synthesis and evaluation of nitrated poly(4-hydroxystyrene) microspheres for pH sensing

Lightly crosslinked nitrated poly(4-hydroxystyrene) microspheres were prepared for pH sensing. The first step is to prepare poly(4-acetoxystyrene) microspheres using porous glass membrane emulsification followed by suspension polymerization. The resulting microspheres have diameters between 1 and 2 μm. They hydrolyzed to poly(4-hydroxystyrene) by exposing them to base. This is followed by nitration to nitric acid. The percentage of nitrogen depends on the nitration conditions. Percentages greater than the theoretical percentage for mononitro poly(4-hydroxystyrene) can be obtained at elevated temperatures indicating partial dinitration. These microspheres were cast into hydrogel membranes for use as pH sensors. The membrane is turbid because the refractive index of the microspheres is higher than the hydrogel refractive index. At high pH, deprotonation of the hydroxyl group introduces a negative charge onto the polymer backbone causing it to swell. Swelling is accompanied by a decrease in microsphere refractive index, which is detected as a decrease in membrane turbidity.     

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry identification of imidacloprid photolysis products

Photolysis of imidacloprid by near ultraviolet (UV) radiation was investigated using reversed phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) and liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS) operated in the positive ion mode. The decomposition of imidacloprid by near UV light is first order with a half life of 10.18 h. Photo-degradation products of imidacloprid identified in this study included imidacloprid urea, imidacloprid olefin, and imidacloprid desnitro. A degradation pathway is proposed for imidacloprid from an examination of the product decay curves obtained in this monitoring study which was performed in a batch test mode.
