Photoelectron asymmetries and two-electron satellites near the 3p → 3d giant-resonance region in atomic Mn

The partial cross-sections and photoelectron angular distributions for several lines in atomic Mn have been measured at photon energies between 50 and 72eV. The intensities of the 3d correlation satellites at 24–26 eV binding energy behave similarly to the mainline intensity near the 3p → 3d giant resonance, but show an enhancement near the 3p threshold which is not present for the main line. A configuration-interaction analysis is applied to help identify the origins of the satellites. The 3p/3d branching ratio from 55–72eV and the shape of the 3d cross section in the resonance region are in good agreement with many-body perturbation-theory calculations.     

A general Galois theory for operations and relations in arbitrary categories

In this paper, we generalize the notions of polymorphisms and invariant relations to arbitrary categories. This leads us to a Galois connection that coincides with the classical case from universal algebra if the underlying category is the category of sets, but remains applicable no matter how the category is changed. In analogy to the situation in the classical case, we characterize the Galois closed classes by local closures of clones of operations and local closures of what we will introduce as clones of (generalized) relations. Since the approach is built on purely category-theoretic properties, we will also discuss the dualization of our notions.

Automated on-line gel permeation chromatography-gas chromatography for the determination of organophosphorus pesticides in olive oil

An on-line combination of gel permeation chromatography and gas chromatography has been designed using either a laboratory-built or a commercially available LC-GC apparatus to determine organophosphorus pesticides in olive oil. Gel permeation chromatography was used for sample pretreatment, viz. to separate the low-molecular-mass pesticides from the higher-molecular-mass fat constituents of the oil. A mixture of n-decane and the azeotropic mixture of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane was found to give an adequate separation between the fat and the organophosphorus pesticides. The pesticide-containing fraction, monitored by a UV detector, was transferred on-line to the gas chromatograph using a loop-type interface. n-Decane (6%, v/v) was added to the eluent in order to widen the application range of the transfer technique towards more volatile pesticides. After solvent evaporation through the solvent vapour exit and subsequent GC separation, the compounds were selectively detected with a thermionic or a flame photometric detector. The set-up allowed the direct analysis of oil samples after dilution in the gel permeation chromatography eluent without further sample clean-up. Detection limits were about 5 and 10 μg/kg with the thermionic and the flame photometric detector, respectively, when using an injection volume of only 30 μl of the 20-fold diluted oil. The total procedure was linear in the 0.01–10 mg/kg range for both detectors. For twenty organophosphorus pesticides, the relative standard deviations were 3–13% at the 20–60 μg/kg level.     

Chaotic actions of topological semigroups

In this paper we propose and explore a general notion of chaos in the abstract context of continuous actions of topological semigroups and show that any chaotic action on a Hausdorff uniform space is sensitive to initial conditions.     

On the positional interchange of the phenyl- and hydroxyl groups in the [C9H11O]+-ion,generated from 2-methyl-2-phenylpropane-1,3-diol (C10H14O2) upon electron-impact

It is shown by deuterium-labelling experiments, that a substantial part of the [M – CH₂OH]⁺-ions from 2-methyl-2-phenyl-propane-1,3-diol must have rearranged to carbonyl-oxygen protonated phenylacetone by a positional interchange of the phenyl- and hydroxyl groups prior to decomposition.
