On the Iterated Biclique Operator

A biclique of a graph G is a maximal induced complete bipartite subgraph of G. The biclique graph of G, denoted by , is the intersection graph of the bicliques of G. We say that a graph G diverges (or converges or is periodic) under an operator F whenever ( for some m, or for some k and , respectively). Given a graph G, the iterated biclique graph of G, denoted by , is the graph obtained by applying the biclique operator k successive times to G. In this article, we study the iterated biclique graph of G. In particular, we classify the different behaviors of when the number of iterations k grows to infinity. That is, we prove that a graph either diverges or converges under the biclique operator. We give a forbidden structure characterization of convergent graphs, which yield a polynomial time algorithm to decide if a given graph diverges or converges. This is in sharp contrast with the situsation for the better known clique operator, where it is not even known if the corresponding problem is decidable. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Spin texture and magnetoroton excitations at nu=1/3

Neutral spin texture (ST) excitations at nu=1/3 are directly observed for the first time by resonant inelastic light scattering. They are determined to involve two simultaneous spin flips. At low magnetic fields, the ST energy is below that of the magnetoroton minimum. With increasing in-plane magnetic field these mode energies cross at a critical ratio of the Zeeman and Coulomb energies of eta(c)=0.020+/-0.001. Surprisingly, the intensity of the ST mode grows with temperature in the range in which the magnetoroton modes collapse. The temperature dependence is interpreted in terms of a competition between coexisting phases supporting different excitations. We consider the role of the ST excitations in activated transport at nu=1/3.     

Absorption spectrum around nu=1: evidence for a small-size Skyrmion

We measure the absorption spectrum of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a GaAs quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We focus on the absorption spectrum into the lowest Landau level around nu=1. We find that the spectrum consists of bound electron-hole complexes, trionlike and excitonlike. We show that their oscillator strength is a powerful probe of the 2DES spatial correlations. We find that near nu=1 the 2DES ground state consists of Skyrmions of small size (a few magnetic lengths).

A two-sided Arnoldi algorithm with stopping criterion and MIMO selection procedure

In this paper we introduce a two-sided Arnoldi method for the reduction of high order linear systems and we propose useful extensions, first of all a stopping criterion to find a suitable order for the reduced model and secondly, a selection procedure to significantly improve the performance in the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) case. One application is in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). We consider a thermo-electric micro thruster model, and a comparison between the commonly used Arnoldi algorithm and the two-sided Arnoldi is performed.     

Working group report: Heavy-ion physics and quark-gluon plasma

This is the report of Heavy Ion Physics and Quark-Gluon Plasma at WHEPP-09 which was part of Working Group-4. Discussion and work on some aspects of quark-gluon plasma believed to have created in heavy-ion collisions and in early Universe are reported.
